Appears to be a problem with the sound with GAIM, when GAIM is running, no other application can use the sound.
A posible workaround (I expect it works) is disable the sound in GAIM, but I need the sound with gaim when I'm working to take care of messages received.
Any more stable solution?
Thanks

For example, I reboot my laptop, and some hour later, I try to use some application that uses sound. Messages about /dev/null used or application crash or xine lock while trying something accurs.
Is as gnome lost the sound device and the apps don't find it.
I allwais need to restart genome (logout and login) to the sound returns.
Another app that crash is gaim (it locks), or k3b (it "uses" /dev/null), xine locks, etc...
I detect the problem in the morning. I have configured xscreensaver instead of gnome-screensaver because xine knows how to lock xscreensaver when I play fullscreen movies.
Any help about the sound under gnome? It is horrible to stop browsers, amule, and many other aplications and then restart gnome.
Any hint?

I'm using gnome and when I double click over a movie file, xine open the file and reproduce it.
That is the normal behaviour, but when my laptop is online for many ours and I try to do the same (double click over a movie file), xine goes to lookup in the splash window and don't open the movie.
I had seen into:
/var/log/gdm/*log /var/log/messages /var/log/Xorg*log
files without success.
I think the problem is with alsa, because sometimes, some apps (after hours of activity) can't open the device, but searching the logs, can't found any messages.
Could anybody help me?
Sound like a sound device lock problem. Open the Xine configuration and look for the sound configuration: How is configured?
