Can you confirm that the microphone is working on another computer? If that is the case, it is not the microphone that is causing issues if it is plugging in using the regular mini-jack.

Try running gnome-sound-recorder included in the gnome-media package. That's what I used to check out all the KMix settings (I use KDE) and the volume/mute controls on the headset. BTW, that's one thing I liked about the Logitech headset--it has a mute and volume control in the cable.
