Any tips for making the best of dd_rescue?

Not really, other than the syntax is slightly different than dd. Run it with no options first to see the syntax (or man it). I don't believe it uses if= and of= if memory serves me correctly. Check the syntax to make certain otherwise you'll beat your head against the wall for nothing.
