I ran it from the gnome-terminal. Not a single message comes out on
start up or while trying to print.
I found I could reproduce the problem, if the directory containing the .lyx
document is not writable. Why? lyx runs latex behind the scenes, which
needs to create intermediate <file>.(aux|log|dvi|ps|pdf) files in the same
directory as the open .lyx document.
