And only when there was an auto extension update check did things go wrong. I have had this happen. It got so bad with broken extensions that I could not remove that I finally (yesterday) recreated my whole TB setup, then moved my folders, filters, and stuff like that over to the new setup.
How did you do that, recreating your TB setup?
You rename your Thunderbird directory. I think the default is somewhere around ~/.mozilla
It is ~/.thunderbird
