Instead of using the 'ifconfig' tool, try running 'ip link show'. Perhaps the interface is just down. Also, many Dells have a keypress/switch to disable the wifi device, make sure it hasn't been disabled.
(In fact, stop using ifconfig entirely on Linux, ip is a much better tool to use these days.)
