Sometimes Firefox crashes without any messages or log, and it is a very
annoying problem. Does anyone have this problem? I have read that it
could be a problem of X.org or Official Nvidia Driver, but I has not
find any solution.
My specs: Geforce 6600GT AGB, pentium IV, 1024 MB Ram, Fedora Core 3,
Firefox 1.0.2

This is another possibilty, some time ago I had some troubles with java
plugin. But I thought that I had fixed, well, actually, I can execute
applets without problems.
Anyway, I have installed this plugins:
Shockwawe Flash and Java.

For me Firefox just disappears without log or message, oftentimes when I
bump a key, haven't found which one, usually in the lower right-hand
corner of my keyboard. Othertimes when during a mouse-click. The
problem wasn't bad until I went to Java 1.5 for my JRE. Then it got worse.
Had this problem since Firefox 1.0.
Happens in Windows 2000, also. Just up and goes away. No errors, no
messages. Just up and goes away. Other times the error-reporting agent
pops up and does its work. Or appears to.
Was hoping that they would fix the problem, given the number of times
the error-reporting agent has popped up, but so far no good. They've
just come out with another dot release, which I haven't tried yet.

There is one site for me that makes it occur more often than any other
place, and that is www.jigzone.com, which uses a java applet to create
online jigsaw puzzles. Problems did not start appearing there for me
until I upgraded to Java 1.5 JRE. I remember that my son has problems
with it at a game site that uses java heavily for its online game. The
problems there either locked up Firefox or caused it to crash with an
error report, but not disappear without warning. That was on WinXP.
And he uses an ATI card. No NVidia drivers. But it does not happen at
all sites using java applets.
My own impression is that it is related to either the java JRE or the
java applets' programming in the web-page or to Firefox's handling of
java. The problems show up on different platforms and also on ATI
videocards means it is not Linux related nor is it related to nvidia
video drivers.

Howeer, please remember that the JRE now has an automatic update
feature, and you will need to turn that off if you don't want it
upgraded again to the most current version. And I don't remember how to
do that right off hand, cuz I normally prefer my JRE to be updated, so
you'll have to go poking around or ask someone else. It's supposed to
notify you, but I don't remember if that is an option or not. I
apologize for that.

I met this issue under FC2, since upgrade to FC3 firefox does not crash
anymore, anyway I encounter problems with java applets, I just can't
type any text in text boxes, and most of time text in option lists does
not display either... is it due to j2re and mozilla-j2re versions? I
think they're 1.5.

I think it actually has more to do with how Mozilla handles programming
of Java applets when the websites use different versions of Java for
their applets or use non-standard programming practices in their
applets. Mozilla should not be quitting suddenly with no message or
log, that's a problem on Mozilla's side. I think the rest is due to
different versions of Java and/or poor programming practices on various
websites. The reason I say this is that my son has had problems with
both J2RE 1.4.2 and 1.5 with FireFox, so it does not seem to be realted
to the JRE, and I've had it happen with all versions of 1.5, but not 1.4.2
My guess is that changing JREs will help with specific websites, but
then the problem will still show up again, just at different websties.

I would suggest testing with 5.0_02. You can set JAVA_PLUGIN_TRACE=1 in
your environment and should get some diagnostics in a file created in
your home directory.
In my time I have seen everything from real Java plugin bugs , to
X/X11/Driver bugs to Firefox/mozilla bugs. The JVM will also try and
create a core file and stack trace if it can, and really tries hard in
5.0 to give some diagnostics.
Why is the Java plugin more fragile? Well unlike some plugins Java is
running as its desktop window aware application but using the canvas
from firefox itself. One day I'll write down why Java (mistakenly)
wanted to know about the desktop.

The problem persists with Java(TM) Plug-in 1.4.2_08-b03
Trying out Java 1.5 has no point, since many sites are not yet
compatible with this version. And in any case, Java 1.4 used to work
with older Firefox 1.0.x versions.

since i upgraded both before noticing the problem. Therefore it is a

Up to now, I always hang when view the adverisement at www.java.com on
a video playing of the underground fighting. The system hang at 5
seconds on playing that movie.....
And I failed to downgarde to 1.5_01 to test because it always failed
to load on firefox but I ln -s is alright and pointed to the
libjavaplugin.so
Any method to downgrade to use the 1.4.2 or 1.5.01 ?

I have also had random crashes with ff, both on windoze 2k, and RH/Fedora 3
and earlier. I am so accustomed to it, that I assume that it just crashes
when it gets overwhelmed or clobberred. Like for example, if you have a lot
of web pages open, then use File/Open to open a pdf file, the pdf may make
it crash -- the app is already working hard to serve up 10 or 12 tabs' worth
of pages.
Other than the 'overhwelming' or 'clobberring' issue, I have had a _few_
times in which Mozilla/Firefox has just crashed, when I wasn't putting it
under a heavy strain. One of those times I distinctly remember, was a
coldfusion page, and I got it to reproduce, too. I didn't pursue it any
further though due to lack of knowledge of the programming variables and
such, and also because even though that seems scientific, it still really
isn't, so I draw no solid conclusions. Still, it would be nice if the
browser got just a little more stable. Still a great browser though...

The 5.0/1.5 plugin is compatible, viz it does accept earlier class
files, its the other way that isn't compatible. ie someone building a
5.0 applet cannot be run on a 1.4 browser in most cases

Don't quite know what to say. I've had no problem with the latest firefox and
the compiled jpackage version of java be it 1.4 or 1.5. I myself would like to
know of any sites where 1.5 is known to cause problems because I have not
encountered one yet (knock on wood). As for the 1.4, I only made the switch to
1.5 last night and have not encountered any java problems so far.
