I installed a month ago Fedora 7 on my new Compaq Notebook, and when using Thunderbird found out that the search component (small box that lets you filter mail in the selected mailbox by sender, to or cc, body content, etc.) is missing and I can't find anywhere to enable it (if it's still part of thunderbird).
Do I have to install it as an extension, because I search for it on thenderbirds addons with no luck.

It is message filters you are talking about? It's under 'Tools' in the top menu bar.

Yes and no.
Yes they are message filters, but it's not what I'm talking about. You can see what I'm saying here:
http://bugs.unl.edu.ar/~martin/tb-filter.png
That's how it looks in Thunderbird 1.5.

What you are looking for is called the 'Quick Search' bar. Right click anywhere in the empty space in the toolbar and click 'Customize'. It should be in the additional buttons in the customize window. Drag it to a place of your choice in the toolbar. If it's not there, it's probably already in the toolbar but not in the visible area. You'll have to increase the size of the main window and reposition the bar.

If you right-click the toolbar, and pick customise, can you add it from there?
I seem to recall reading something about it goofing, and placing the search gadget off the edge of the window, so it's not displayed.

I still click on Tools and then filters. Do you have the Tools in your top margin?

I'm pretty sure you can also (not at the computer at the moment) right-click on the email address and choose something like 'create filter from address.'

People, this is not what I want.
In tb 1.5 (which is the version I'm using now at work) I have a search box which once applied the filter it only shows those messages (like a search filter), but when I'm done, I cancel it and go back to the normal mailbox view.
Another nice thing it has is that is right above the mailbox list, so I don't have to go to Tools -> Message Filters.
Is it available?

Martin,
I see the "search" box on both 1.5 (FC6) and 2.0 (F7). In 1.5 there is an option under view to turn it off, but I do not see that option in 2.0. I also looked in the advanced config in 2.0 and did not see anything obvious.
As a last resort, you could try moving your profile and letting thunderbird create a new one.

Martin,
I did a little more looking. My F7 access is a bit limited, but take a look in your .thunderbird/random-directory-name directory for a file called localstore.rdf. In that file there is XML similar to this:
<RDF:Description RDF:about="chrome://messenger/content/messenger.xul#mail-bar2"
mode="full"
currentset="button-getmsg,button-newmsg,button-address,separator,button-reply,button-replyall,button-forward,separator,button-tag,button-delete,button-junk,button-print,separator,button-goback,button-goforward,spring,search-container" />
Note the last item on the currentset line.
With thunderbird stopped try adding ",search-container" (without the additional quotes) to the equivalent line your localstore.rdf and restart thunderbird.
Did you convert from 1.5 to 2.0? Either way it sounds like it might be time for a bug report.

Bob, thanks.
But it was already there. The problem is that in 1.5 the search box was below the toolbar, while in 2.0 it's in the toolbar.
The other problem is that there are to many bottons on the bar, so I wasn't able to see the search box (even when it was there). Why is it that when the toolbar gets filled anything else you add to it ends up lost at the end (unable one to see it or use it).
I took away some bottons that I dont use and now it's visible.
thanks alot.

It was an update. Anyway I think I'll file a bug report. Do I do it in the fedora bugtraq or do I go to the thunderbird page?

Martin,
That's a good question!
Which bugzilla would Fedora developers want?

Thunderbird is listed as a component in the Redhat bugzilla. That would be a good place to start.
I had just noticed the same thing (mailbox views missing in TB 2.x) and found this thread. The prior comment was partially correct. Click on a blank space in the menubar to customize it, but the option is actually a 'view:' tool which you can then drag to your toolbar. This is totally different than the quick search.
A friend and I wrote the first 'mailbox view' software back in the early 90's (the xlview and ML Unix mail readers) and I fought for years to get it included in Netscape when I worked there. It was nice to have it finally show up in Thunderbird ten years later. Then it was quite disturbing to find it had vanished, but it's still there, just not exposed. Those who have used custom (named) views can't live without them.
