Hello,
I have a computer running Red Hat 9 (Shrike). I'd like to upgrade to FC3. Unfortunately, the (graphical) installer doesn't seem to recognize the presence of a previous installation and does not offer to upgrade it.
Here's my partition list:
/dev/sda1 on /boot type ext3 (rw) /dev/sda2 on /usr type ext3 (rw) /dev/sda5 on /home type ext3 (rw) /dev/sda6 on / type ext3 (rw) /dev/sda7 on /var type ext3 (rw)
I wonder if this has to do with the fact that this is a purely SCSI computer? However, the installer does load the appropriate SCSI modules during the pre-graphical phase; and the bottom of anaconda.log shows that apparently it goes look for things there:
* moving (1) to step language * moving (1) to step keyboard * running ['/usr/X11R6/bin/setxkbmap', '-layout', 'us', '-model', 'pc105', '-option', ''] * moving (1) to step findrootparts * isys.py:mount()- going to mount /tmp/sda1 on /mnt/sysimage * isys.py:mount()- going to mount /tmp/sda2 on /mnt/sysimage * isys.py:mount()- going to mount /tmp/sda5 on /mnt/sysimage * isys.py:mount()- going to mount /tmp/sda6 on /mnt/sysimage * isys.py:mount()- going to mount /tmp/sda7 on /mnt/sysimage * moving (1) to step installtype * Detected 2032M of memory * Swap attempt of 1000M to 2000M * moving (1) to step partitionmethod * moving (-1) to step installtype * moving (-1) to step findrootparts * moving (-1) to step keyboard
Help please...
You can't just upgrade, AFAIK, from RH9 to FC3. I think it has to do with the difference in kernels and major changes in, well, everyting - config file differences, etc. It's just not a good idea. The best you can do is leave /home alone (choose the option to manually partition) and wipe everything else.

What about RH9->FC1->FC2->FC3? I've seen a procedure for upgrading from RH9 to FC1 using yum. I may try that. I have lots of things installed on that computer and I hope there's a better solution than starting everything from scratch again :-(

If you are desparate, you can do RH9->FC1->FC3, but it is not recommended.

not a recommended procedure thou
I would guess, given how many horror stories I've heard, that going from RH9->FC1 would involve not just a yum update, but also manual tweaking before you could do FC1->FC2, which would also require manual tweawking, and so on.
Seriously, backup home and maybe /var/www - everything else, you can reinstall. You could even rpm -q > foo.txt to make sure you know what you had installed.

Can be done but believe me it isn't worth the headaches. It could take ages to get things working properly if you do run into any headaches. People around work here have upgraded from FC1 to FC3 with minimal headaches but others have had major problems where a total install was required.
There was a message posted the other day about doing a complete rpm list of installed packages and then going from there.
Any locally compiled programs will have to be rebuilt anyways.
I still find pieces of my RH install and I am still on FC1 and this is after a year of FC1.
I have succefully installed FC3 on my HP laptop. But, I am having problem with get the modem to work. I have installed the Linux driver for the modem, but I am still not able to get it to work. I following the instruction on "http://phep2.technion.ac.il/goldberg/post-install.html", when I run wvdialconf, it still saids no modem found. Has any one gotton the Agere AC97 modem to work on FC3? Please help. Thanks.

When I am shutting down FC3, it exits out of xwindows and goes to character mode, at this point, the screen becomes unreadable, what do I need to set to get the character mode to be readalbe? Thanks.

IIRC yes that modem can be made to work.
The proper forum for this topic is the mailing list at www.linmodems.com . They have the experts and developers for the linmodem drivers, and the site you got that driver from is theirs.

Agree with the advice to do a fresh install rather than upgrade. I also find it useful to back up /etc to "mine" for config settings, user/group definitions, etc.
If you DO decide to upgrade (as I have admittedly done on occasion), "rpm -qa --last > RPMS_by_Install_Time.txt" is very helpful. Look at the end of the output for packages that pre-date the upgrade and remove, upgrade from 3rd party repos, or otherwise deal with them as necessary.
