It is kind of nice but too many things just don't work write. I would rather start everything my self and in the right workspace (some are starting up in different workspaces).
The 'settings' > 'sessin and startup' dialog on Application Autostart tab basically says you have no control over restarting what was previously running.
Seems like I grumbled about this during the beta, but lost what was said about dumbing down Xfce startup.

Play with un/checking "Save session for future logins" when you log out. Say, stop all your applications, log out with saving session, and then from then on always uncheck this box when you log out. I haven't tried it, but I believe this should work.

Wrong. Close everything before shutting down, select "save sessions for future logins" and Bob's your uncle. HTH HAND.

On the Xfce list I was told that this only works if you logoff before shutting down. If you shutdown from the option on the panel, it saves everything regardless of this setting. So more testing is needed.
I just joined the Xfce list this morning to take all of my Xfce questions to the list where I am likely to find more people using Xfce.

You can also try the official Xfce forum at http://forum.xfce.org/index.php because I know that one of the core developers is a regular there.
