Dear list
I'm using FC 12 x86_64 on my dell vostro 1520 notebook with 160GB hdd
installed in it , now I want to upgrade the hdd from 160GB to 320GB
7200 RPM
is it possible to transfer fedora 12 from one hdd to another ?? I dont
want to re-install it as lots of software and configurations are there
in old one
is there any way like ghost ( like in M$ environment ) for Linux or may
be something like that

You might also want to look at g4l. It does disk imaging and has a clone
option for a disk to disk option.
The latest released version is on sourceforge, but a later version is at
ftp://amd64gcc.dyndns.org/g4l-v0.33alpha12.iso
That is a bootable ISO image, but it can also be setup to run from the grub
menu.
I'm the current maintainer, and build it using my Fedora systems and use it
for my classroom machines.
Are you using LVM or other setup?
In making an image, it will be the same size.If ext2/3/4 you could proable use
parted magic to resize non-LVM partitions.

Just uses create a mirror of a system I'm running. May help?! -- gary

this example assumes a /dev/sda and (new) /dev/sdb
sda has 3 partitions, 1 swap, /boot, /. / and /boot are ext3 fstype.
## create new partition on new disk
parted (you need to set the partition type as gpt)
mkpart
## (model after target disk only larger, note: change the names (labels)
## create 3 partition /, /boot, swap)
## make filesystem and copy
mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb3
mount /dev/sdb3 /mnt

find . -xdev | cpio -pdumv /mnt

I've done it using clonezilla ...bootable iso
everything gone fine..... but one question remaining about HDD size (
how to utilize remaining space in new HDD) ..

DD is the slow way to do it - it has to copy every byte, and can not
change partition size on the fly. That is why there are tools like
g4l and parted. While dd will work, it is not the best tool for the job.

you get the devices correct though! After dd has finished, you can use
gparted to grow you partitions (or system-config-lvm in case of lvm).
Alternatively, if you want to rearrange your partitions, you could
create a partition table seperately, and then copy individual
partiations over using dd. For that to work however, I suspect you
need to make sure you only have a partition table, rather then
complete filesystems.

There is g4l - a Ghost clone. There is also the gpated boot-able
disk that lets you use parted to create partitions on the new drive,
and copy over the partitions from the old drive. It will also resize
most file system types. When coping to a larger partition, you can
resize and move at the same time. Because it understands file
systems, it only hast to copy over the used blocks, saving time.

move from 250 to 500 Gigs, it worked just fine.

I don't have an answer for your question. But, I do have a
request/observation.
There is no longer a "fedora-list(a)redhat.com" list. Any message sent to
that list will end up in the "users(a)lists.fedoraproject.org". So, there
is no need to send the same message to both lists and there is no
need/reason to Cc the old "fedora-list(a)redhat.com" list. The only thing
it does is have everyone on the list getting duplicates...

I don't have an answer for your question. But, I do have a
request/observation.
There is no longer a "fedora-list(a)redhat.com" list. Any message sent to
that list will end up in the "users(a)lists.fedoraproject.org". So, there
is no need to send the same message to both lists and there is no
need/reason to Cc the old "fedora-list(a)redhat.com" list. The only thing
it does is have everyone on the list getting duplicates...

This certainly works, but what I was mentioning to the O.P. was that at the mkfs
step, there are options which can improve performance, particularly with ext4
and TB+ filesystems. But this is perfectly functional, and will allow for the
resize.
