Keith, I have, I believe, the same camera. You need to install the
SPCA driver for it -- this is not part of the mainline kernel.  The
following worked for me:


wget http://drpixel.tuxfamily.org/fedora/drpixel-release-1-1.noarch.rpm
rpm -Uvh drpixel-release-1-1.noarch.rpm
yum install --enablerepo=drpixel kmod-gspca

in aMSN, if you use a NAT/router, you need to open ports 6890-6900 for
the camera to work.  I believe I also had to do this in the fedora
firewall.

Unfortunately, when I run: 
yum install --enablerepo=drpixel kmod-gspca

I get this error message:

Do I uninstall the older files which are causing the conflicts and 
then run 'yum install' again? I don't want to risk doing anything 
like that without knowing it's the correct thing to do! It is a bit 
peculiar, as the new files are the same number as the older ones.

What is the version of the kernel you are currently running (type
'uname -a' to find that out).

If it is something newer than 2.6.18-1.2849 then you can probably remove it.
Alternatively, you could try to install the kmod-gspca specifically
for your current kernel by using the version in the command you used
perviously.

kmod-gspca-01.00.04-1.2.6.18_1.2849
or
kmod-gspca-01.00.04-1.2.6.18_1.2798
depending on which kernel you are currently using. Those are the only
packages that I saw at: http://drpixel.tuxfamily.org/fedora/6/i386/

I did the kmod-gspca as you suggested, but there is no difference. The 
web cam still isn't found. If it's of any importance, there are no 
'video' folder or files in /dev.

I have also tried twice doing new installations on a spare hard drive 
and trying to install the web cam again, with, and without the kernel 
version. No success. That is why I haven't sent this reply earlier.

I'm completely at a loss what to do next, as I *don't* want to fire XP 
up every time I want to use the web cam.

After *very* many hours of trying, I have come to a complete halt in 
trying to get it working. 

I have looked at the mailing lists and forums of other distros, and 
they all appear to be having a lot of problems getting webcams to 
work. So it isn't just a Fedora problem.

My webcam wants to use /dev/video, but there isn't one! I have no idea 
how to create one. In fact, I have tried several other distros on my 
"experimenting" hard drive, and none of the create a /dev/video 
folder. I am coming to the conclusion that, until I can get 
a /dev/video folder and file, there is no chance of my camera 
working.

What's very frustrating is that, when I bought the camera, I read on 
other lists, that it worked "out of the box" in Linux. 

I ran installation CD with XP, and five minutes later, the camera was 
working and properly set up. GRRRRR!

Unless someone can offer me any other advice, I am afraid it's back to 
XP whenever I want to use the webcam.

Well, I didn't use the rpms to get mine working. I just grabbed the
gspca tarball, compiled it, it did the depmod stuff automatically at the
end of the compile, really slick!, then I fired up kopete (installed
with KDE) and opened it's config / video and there I was looking back at
myself. That's all it took. So, if you can recall all the rpms you
installed and can erase them, grab the tarball and compile it. If you
upgrade your kernel, you'll have to re make the package again. Ric

Sorry to trouble you again, but I have a problem. I wonder if you 
would please advise me what to do?

I have done a fresh basic KDE installation on my spare hard drive.

The un-tarring of gspca went OK, as did the ./configure.

However, make stopped with the error message:

/lib/modules/2.6.18-1.2798.fc6/build   No such file or directory

There is an empty file called build, but it has a question mark on it.

I haven't a clue what to do about it. The kernel headers are 
installed, but I am wondering if there is another package which 
should have been installed, but is missing. I'm probably wrong, 
though!

I would be using the standard  ./configure,make, make install - if 
that is correct.

I have now installed kernel-devel, using yum. Then I rebooted.

Sorry, but I get the same error message saying that there is no 
'/lib/modules/2.6.18-1.2798.fc6/build' directory. The /build 
directory is as it was, a file with a question mark on it.

The latest kernel is 2.6.18-1.2849.fc6, and that's probably the kernel-
devel RPM that got installed.  You can check that by doing "rpm -q
kernel-devel" as the root user.

Verify which kernel you're running (via the "uname -r" command).  If
it's not the current one (I suspect you're running the older
2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 kernel) AND you don't want to upgrade to the current
kernel (I recommend you do that unless you have good reasons not to),
then you must tell yum to install the kernel-devel RPM that matches it:

	yum install kernel-devel-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6

Yum may refuse to do that since you probably have a later version
already installed.  In that case, do 

	yum remove kernel-devel*

to remove all instances of the kernel-devel RPM, THEN do:

	yum install kernel-devel-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6

to install the older one that matches your kernel.

cd into this directory (adjusting for your kernel version) and as root 
first: ls config.h
if it's not there then type: touch config.h
You'll get an empty file named config.h and thats OK. Try your compile
again and it should make. But, use the ./gspca_build file to do that for
you. It'll make, install and set everything up for you, Ric

There was another thread on this list relatede to webcams (or maybe it
was fedora-devel) that indicated that there was a problem where yum
was installing the kernel-devel package that mismatch the installed
kernels arch (i.e devel.i586 and a kernel.i386) that was causing this
kind of gspca build grief. That might also be something worth
investigating.

Yes ... Anaconda's fault ... not yum's ... that might be the problem
with compiling the kernel module for the cam. See the end of the
thread called "Webcam choice" in November on this list for specifics.

Thank you all for your suggestions for getting my webcam to work. 
There are too many to quote here!

I have worked through them all, but no success. There were lots of 
error messages. My kernel was i586, the kernel-devel was i686, and 
the headers were i386.

Wondering if that was the problem, I did a fresh installation on my 
spare hard drive, specifying 'linux 686' at the start of the install. 
I now have i686 for both the kernel and the kernel-devel, but still 
i386 for the headers.

I can't find any i686 headers to install, but I thought that they were 
part of the devel package? If so, surely they should be i686?

I have worked through your suggestions again, but still nothing. There 
is no /lib/modules/2.6.18-1.2798.fc6/build directory. Perhaps I 
should update the kernel and see if that helps? At my low level of 
expertise, I am reluctant to do it if it's not necessary!

Incidentally, on two other distros, both of which have the 'build' 
directory, I have tried compiling the gspca tarball as suggested by 
Ric. In both cases I had success and my web cam works.

That is the situation at the moment.

That's normal. I'm not sure if the kernel-headers package contains *any*
CPU instructions -- they certainly don't need a particular processor to
work, so are considered i386.

It shouldn't be a directory, it should be a symbolic link ("symlink"),
pointing somewhere like /usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-1.2798.fc6-i386/ -- use
ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.18-1.2798.fc6/
to check. It may be a "dangling symlink" -- that directory may not
exist.

If so, try running 
yum install /usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-1.2798.fc6-i386
which should find and install the correct package

Thank you for your reply, the information, and your suggestions. 

Sorry for the delay in sending this. My ISP went faulty yet again and 
there were no e-mails between last Saturday evening and this (Monday) 
mid-day. 

I have postponed trying to get the web cam to work, until after 
Christmas - too busy before. 

I have printed out all the suggestions, so will have a good go at 
solving the problem when things are "back to normal" and there are 
just my wife and I here on our own.

Logitech webcams are generally well supported under linux, I think.  Someone 
sent me the link http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Webcam-HOWTO/hardware.html#MODELS 
and ISTR that a number of Logitech models are listed as good.  I'd certainly 
consider going to Logitech for help when everything else has been tried.

Logitech webcams are good (actually philips, I think..), but Logitech
sucks. And talking about Logitech webcam support is completely
ingenuous, since it simply does not exist. 

I suppose that developers of the diff. drivers from matching webcam
models brand Logitech, could say something about Logitech.. :-))

Logitech, ATI, and some other 'names' you could bet that they'd
listen. Let's not do it all at once, but every few days pick another

All the kmod rpms do is install the modules for your particular kernel
into the right folders, AFAIK. You may have to give the kernel module
a kick by using the command 'modprobe gspca' where gspca is the proper
name for the module ... I am just taking a wild guess ... using that
command with the wrong or non-existant module should just do nothing.
There might be a bunch of modules with one that is most appropriate
for your cam. Some others to try might be spca501, spca505, spca506,
spca508 and spca561.

Doing some Googling gave this link:

It looks like "gspca" might be the right modprobe option to use but
that you might have to put some options for it in the modules.conf
file to make it look decent.

strange problem with LAN

I have assigned IP addresses to the boxes on my home network,
192.168.1.11 thru 192.168.1.14.  This arrangement has worked without
problems until today.

When I booted up the machine at 192.168.1.13, instead of the usual
report of eth0 being activated I saw an error message: "Some other host
already uses 192.168.1.13".  I was unable to ping 192.168.1.13 from
another machine.  Box 192.168.1.13 remained unconnected to the LAN until
I manually activated eth0 using system-config-network.  Then everything
worked normally.

I rebooted another of the boxes 192.168.1.11 and got a similar message:
"Some other host already uses 192.168.1.11".  Again, activating eth0
solved the problem.

What's happening?  Is there an easy solution?  If not, what can I do to
troubleshoot this further?

That happened to me, just once, about two weeks ago.  I rebooted the box again
and everything worked fine and has continued to do so.

I put it down to "just one of those things" as I haven't seen any of my
other
machines do that.  Yet.

Er, are you using dhcp?  You might also check to see if the arp tables
in your router have been flushed.

most of the others.  Try running yum again today and see if it fixes

its IP address, does it hear itself?

Further information:
(1) I don't use DHCP to assign IP addresses on the LAN
(2) On my machines dual booting FC6 and XP (where the XP boxes use a
different range of IP addresses) Windows isn't having this problem.
(3) I update my linux systems regularly.

Is your router enabled as a dhcp server?
