i am using thunderbird. it has a place to browse for sig files. i know i have to make a file then chmod a+x i think.. correct? but i think there is special things that need to be in it like a -- or something
Create ~/.signature
Perms could be 544.
The line beginning with '--' just signals the beginning of the signature file as you see below.
If you want to get fancy, you could have a long list of signatures, then have a shell or a perl script rotate them every so often. Like mine.

I don't know about signature management in thunderbird.. but to be RFC compliant, the signature separator should be '-- ', not '--' (yes, notice the extra space).
My 2 cts.

Mine looks like this:
$ ls -l ~/.sig* -rw-rw-r-- 1 jmccarty jmccarty 257 Aug 1 17:38 /home/jmccarty/.sig
