Hi,
recently I re installed firefox (in order to have the new firefox 49).
Till now, to install programs, I always used yum or rpm, and never I used the .tar file.
After I unpacked the .tar file, I was immediately able to run the new version of firefox simply creating a new symbolic link point to the new version to the file executable, *without changing anything in the files** unpacked files inside the directory where I dowloaded **the file .tar** (/home/my_dir/Downloads)*.
That is very simple as it is also very good …
But I am asking to myself if I really made all in the right way....
Of course, in order to use an application, it is enough to run the executable file -
But, under usual conditions, they are many other files that support the installation...
Generally they are not inside the directory where I unpacked the .tar file,–
Generally they are put in some appropriate directories.... and I didn't change anything never I modified or move files after I unpacked files in the original directory .
The organization of the programs, inside the directories of the computer, is managed by the programs that manage the installation... and in my case I didn't make anything..
So I would ask what is the correct way to arrange files after to unpack the .tar file for a program like firefox.
Thank you
regards
Angelo

You seem to be getting firefox directly from Mozilla?
Why are you not using firefox from the fedora repos?
If you're on F24 the most current version is firefox-49.0-2.fc24.
Isn't that sufficient?
thank you to answering me,
I re installed firefox because it didn't work for all the graphic plugins that was required ....
(before that with the .tar file) I tried also with yum to get the file from repository, but I get only a old version that didn't solve my problem... And using .tar file I get -firefox 49- that run all the graphic plug in that I need..
I use Fedora 21, and I wouldn't TRY to re install fedora in order to change only firefox...
-------------------------- Looking on the web, I think it can exist a file (like make or config) that arrange to finish the installation... But I cannot know what is tis file

they are some files that could do what I need, to finish the installation :
- run-mozilla.sh - updater.ini - precomplete
but I am not sure about they really do...

You should. F21 was EOLed over a year ago so it has significant security bugs that will not be fixed. You really ought to upgrade to at least F23. If that isn't feasible, you need to ask yourself why you're using Fedora rather than some other distro.

As root, unpack the tar archive in /usr/local, then create a simlink in /usr/local/bin pointing to /usr/local/firefox/firefox
Hi Francois,
I also thought something like what you said...,
but I took a look to the unpacked files ... .... there I found some files that look to be able to work good in order to configure firefox...:
- updater.ini - updater - precomplete - removed-files - platform.ini - ...............
.... *(for example)... **the content of the file precomplete* is this :
================================ remove "updater.ini" remove "updater" remove "run-mozilla.sh" remove "removed-files" remove "precomplete" remove "plugin-container" remove "platform.ini" remove "omni.ja" remove "libxul.so" remove "libssl3.so" remove "libsoftokn3.so" remove "libsoftokn3.chk" remove "libsmime3.so" remove "libplds4.so" remove "libplc4.so" .............................. ,............................. rmdir "icons/" rmdir "gtk2/" rmdir "gmp-clearkey/0.1/" rmdir "gmp-clearkey/" rmdir "dictionaries/" rmdir "defaults/pref/" .............................. ,............................. =========================== are you sure that simply unpack the files in /usr/local is the best way to arrange the installation ?
thank you
Angelo

I found somethig interesting to this link : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/update-firefox-latest-version
Update Firefox to the latest version
By default, Firefox is set to automatically update itself but you can always do a manual update. Here's how: *Note:* If you use your Linux distribution's packaged version of Firefox, you will need to wait for an updated package to be released to its package repository. This article only applies if you installed Firefox manually (without using your distribution's package manager). - Click the menu button [image: New Fx Menu] , click help [image: Help-29] and select About Firefox. - The *About Firefox* window will open and Firefox will begin checking for updates and downloading them automatically. When the updates are ready to be installed, click Restart Firefox to Update.
====================== I already updated manually firefox so it doesn't work anymore for me. But perhaps can be good for other people.
