Suddenly yum update no longer works on my FC6 machine. Somehow a file /var/cache/yum/stablemirrors file is created. I can't find it on other versions of Fedora.
Then the yum update process gets stuck on the primary.xml.gz
It starts being processed but then just quits part of the way through.
Can anyone explain this?

You seem to know more than I do. I have a stock FC6 yum and it works fine for updates. What can I do to help?

It sounds like you have the fast mirror plugin, and the mirror it is trying to use is not responding. (Too many people trying to download, down for maintenance, etc...) You can disable the pluging, or you can try moving the stablemirrors file to another location. (That way, you can move it back if it breaks something.)

Also, every time you run yum it says "Loading "stablemirror" plugin" and 'stablemirror: the easily edited stablemirror file is "/var/cache/yum/stablemirrors"', and you have downloaded and installed stablemirror from http://georgeanelson.com/stablemirror.htm, probably the version for FC5, by running the commands listed on that page. Try removing the files /etc/yum/pluginconf.d/stablemirror.conf and /usr/lib/yum-plugins/stablemirror.py that you installed by hand with two cp commands.
Google is your friend, but if you had posted the actual error message, one of the other responders might possibly have read it and realized what it said.

Thsi seemed to be a non-event. Caused by slow servers and or repositoories.

Thanks. I think your diagnosis is correct.
