7:35 a.m.
I did a yum update last night (on FC4) but it was failing some
dependencies for vlc. So I yum removed vlc and after manually installing
libquicktime-devel, was then able to do the update. But now I can't
reinstall vlc. I get the error below. Is there any way to resolve this?
How come it does not find these dependencies?

I had a similar problem, and found that I was still using some 'fc3'
packages (look at rpm -qa). I eliminated them and downloaded the
current stuff from livna and all was well.

on using Livna's vlc and installed videolan-client instead.

I can do a yum remove vlc and yum install vlc works for me. Perhaps
I have some dependencies that have since been removed, but that
seems odd.

No repo other than release & updates are in FC4 by default. With FC5
you'll also get fedora extras by default. atrpms/freshrpms/livna and
all the others are 3rd party repos and will never be shipped with
FC<N> by default.
Unless a revolution in U.S. patent laws happens you will always have
to perform extra activation steps to get your favourite multimedia
bits.
Maybe someone could email them to me off-list.

I never removed it and this was a base FC4 install.

As a side note, what is the difference between vlc and videolan-client
anyway? Why does the vlc package require so many more dependencies than
videolan-client?

You've got the ATrpms version of the package. Perhaps that doesn't
include the fedora-extras.repo file?

I suspect you may have repository conflicts. The only "unofficial" repo
I use is my own, so someone else will have to help you out there.

Are the only official ones the ones that come standard?

Probably endorsement by the Fedora Foundation.

Yes (though some are disabled by default).

They're in the official fedora-release package. If you change the
"--replacefiles --replacepkgs" options in the rpm command I gave earlier
to "--oldpackage", you should get the official package.

You might need to disable some or all of the other repos, at least
temporarily. You might also need to remove some existing packages that
clash with ones from the repos you have left. The situation should
certainly be recoverable though.

Are you saying that fedora-release-4-2_3.rhfc4.at isn't the ATrpms
version of the package (fedora-release)? The OP appears to have had to
create fedora-extras.repo for himself.

They should be the same program, just built in incompatible ways.
Livna makes an effort to build against the available packages
in the fedora core/extras repositories and never replace them
with conflicting versions. If you follow this mailing list
very long you will see problems mentioned regarding most of
the other third-party repositories and incompatible dependencies.
If you take a stock FC4 and add only the livna repository,
vlc will install along with all the dependencies, most of
which will be pulled from extras.

It's a repository conflit. You're using ffmpeg and some other packages
from another repository which conflits Fedora Extras and rpm.livna.org.
