Get the rpm xmms-mp3-1.2.8-3.p.i386.rpm and this will allow xmms to support mp3.
I forget where I pulled it from but I see http://dag.wieers.com/packages/xmms-mp3/ -or- http://www.gurulabs.com/downloads.html

Which has a yum repository - simply add it to your yum.conf to enjoy the "extras" via yum. They list the configs which you can use to use them for a yum repository for updates, freshrpms, etc.
