On 8/12/07, Paul Smith phhs80@gmail.com wrote:
I have tried with all available pdf viewers, but the text is not copyable at all. Something seems to be wrong with the method 'print to ps + ps2pdf'.
Let's try for a common target:
Target: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Infrastructure/fedorapeople.org
Methods: 1 - cups-pdf. Produces copyable text in Adobe Reader
2 - LOOP extension for FF. Also produces copyable text
3 - Openoffice - text *is* copyable, but the formatting is horrible!
4 - I did 'select all' in FF, made a new OO doc, and pasted it in. PDF export produces a file with copyable text, and decent formatting.
In summary, I was able to produce a PDF w/copyable text using all four methods. #3 looked like hell, but the text was there. Seems like #4 ought to Just Work. I'm curious - can anyone can duplicate my results? I went into further detail about each method previously.
Chris
PS - I've found that not all pages work with method #1 - on some pages (gmail, e.g.), the text appears to be copyable, but it is in fact copying gibberish to the clipboard. By gibberish, I mean those nice little unicode character boxes that you see when your font can't do UTF-8.

Chris,
Some web pages will not let you have copyable text from the resultant pdf, the one you chose does of course. Why not try the following page:
http://www.esmas.com/deportes/futbol/652661.html
as for the methods, pick your poison. Option that works, is not mentioned above but you lose all formatting and without the picture. right click on the web page, do a select all, then ctrl+c or select copy from right click menu, open a text editor and save the file. If you choose option 3 OpenOffice crashes/does not respond. After you have saved the text in a text file select all and copy it open OpenOffice and paste it. You can export to pdf and the resulting PDF's text is copyable just badly formatted.
I have tried ps2acii after using ps2pdf on the above page and I get the following:
[olivares@localhost Documents]$ ps2ascii toluca0-2santos.ps

If the text is copyable you will see the text there otherwise, you get lots of \Upsilon\Phi .... stuff.
Now, we should conclude that not all webpages that we print from into pdf will have text that is copyable.
Thank you, hiowever for sharing Methods that we can use to print to pdf and summarizing them for us.
Regards,
Antonio

Yes - I picked a fairly easy (and short) page.
Your example can be converted using method #2 - the LOOP extension for FF. It's 1.6 MB, but can be copied from, and the images and layout are intact.
I'm not sure how to proceed with Paul's problem, but I think we've narrowed it down to a font issue at least. Not sure if this is useful, but a quick list of installed fonts/font packages:

Thanks to all for your help and patience. The problem is finally solved!
The cause of the problem was the fact that I had msttcorefonts installed. After I removed them, I could produce a pdf file with copyable text from
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Infrastructure/fedorapeople.org
I have to do an inspection to see whether I have other superfluous fonts installed. Could someone please tell me the minimal set of fonts that one should have installed to have F7 working fine?

I have just noticed that web-pages shown on Firefox with Liberation Fonts are transformed by ps2pdf in pdf files with non-copyable text. Any workaround?

To see the problem that I am now mentioning, please try to produce a pdf of the GMail frontpage:
www.gmail.com
which is rendered on Firefox with Liberation Fonts, in case you have them installed.

I can confirm this (using KDE's PDF exporter). I'm not sure why it is. Perhaps because Liberation is a "non-standard" font, font exporters assume that recipients won't have it and thus export to graphics in order to guarantee formatting is preserved.
If you use Fedora's style options to force sans serif (temporarily) to render as "monospace" then the PDF will have copyable text.

It springs to mind that perhaps a PDF file, or the originating Postscript file used to make a PDF file, can embed certain *types* of fonts as fonts (e.g. Postscript fonts), but text using other types might have to be incorporated as pre-rendered graphics. Rather than it being certain fonts, in themselves.
I looked into making PDF files a while ago, but only touched on it. My problem was less to do with copy and paste on the final file, but more to do with some PDF files being huge because of the embedding.
Over time, I've come to feel that PDF files are a curse.

Liberation Fonts can be embedded as copyable text in PDF files in F7. But it seems that the F7 mechanism of printing to a PS file is not right, as when printing to a PS from www.gmail,com, one gets with ps2pdf a PDF file with the following fonts:
$ pdffonts gmail.pdf name type emb sub uni object ID ------------------------------------ ------------ --- --- --- --------- WQDACH+Liberation_Sans.Bold.0.0.10b6c.9a62.Set0 Type 1C yes yes no 13 0 TAMSTW+Liberation_Sans.Regular.0.0.1b044.b87a.Set0 Type 1C yes yes no 11 0 GBGOAU+Nimbus_Roman_No9_L.Regular.0.0.23ec4.b59e.Set0 Type 1C yes yes no 8 0 $
However, if one goes to OpenOffice to create a document only with Libeartion Fonts and then one exports the document to PDF, one gets a PDF with *copyable* text and with the Liberation Fonts embedded:
$ pdffonts ooo.pdf name type emb sub uni object ID ------------------------------------ ------------ --- --- --- --------- BAAAAA+LiberationSans TrueType yes yes yes 14 0 CAAAAA+LiberationSans-Bold TrueType yes yes yes 9 0 $

BAAAAA+LiberationSans TrueType yes yes yes 14 0 CAAAAA+LiberationSans-Bold TrueType yes yes yes 9 0 $
In addition, I would like to report that inside the PS file I see the same fonts, i.e., I see
* Liberation_Sans.Bold.0.0.10b6c.9a62.Set0 * Liberation_Sans.Regular.0.0.1b044.b87a.Set0 * Nimbus_Roman_No9_L.Regular.0.0.23ec4.b59e.Set0
This means that F7 was not able of indicating
BAAAAA+LiberationSans TrueType yes yes yes 14 0 CAAAAA+LiberationSans-Bold TrueType yes yes yes 9 0
but OpenOffice was. I am suspecting that something is wrong with the way F7 prints to a PS file, not indicating in the PS file the correct fonts.

Why would firefox use that font to render that page? There is no reference to Liberation in any form on that page.

I just installed that font package, the newer of the two showing, then hit F5 in FF-2.0.0.6, but an lsof shows nothing related to that font.
Call me puzzled...

The two things that spring to mind are:
The default fonts settings in the browser
And, the fonts system working out a substitute for a font set on a webpage that you don't have on your system.

Paul, your comment just triggered a memory from when I installed FC6 on this box. It seems there are _two_ versions of msttcorefonts extant carrying an identical version number. One is a tarball and one is an rpm, and the rpm seems to be broken although I compared them and they compared very well except the rpm was smaller as it was missing 2 fonts that were in the M$ tarball.
I was never able to make them work, and my system was largely hosed, when I had installed the version (same version number IIRC) that is available through the yum/smart/rpm repositories after installing FC6 here.
Knowing I had previously made it work very well on an FC2 system, I bit the bullet and went to the M$ site and downloaded their version and installed it.
It worked flawlessly, and still is right now.
I also have half a gigabyte of fancy fonts from goldenweb.it, all of which work very nicely indeed in OOo.
