Since the pgrade to OO2, we have random crashes in Writer. As they happen to my wife and not me, I'm not there to see what happend 'just before', but she says that 'nothing' happend just before. Is there a log to check? If I open it for her at the command line, will it leave output when it crashes?
Thanks.

I cannot answer your questions, as I have the same ones.
Once, oowriter crashed when I clicked the right mouse button, another time while scrolling a document, another time while selecting text to be deleted and then typing new text over it.
Yes, it does crash every day or two.

Thats what I intend to do. However, with the information I have (none) it won't help. Thats why I want to create output on the the command line.

In a terminal, type "oo" TAB TAB and see what you get. The OOo commands are short and easy to type. Running oowriter produces some output on the terminal. I don't know if it will say anything useful after a crash.
I haven't figured out how to make a launcher that runs a command and then stays open after the command so one can read the output. (I suppose it could run a script that runs the command and then gets stuck in a loop.) ____________________________________________________________________ TonyN.:' mailto:tonynelson@georgeanelson.com ' http://www.georgeanelson.com/

My wife is encountering the same problem, and is quite unhappy about it. So far, I have not found any way to obtain any debugging info.

Seen frequent crashes on the oo2 writer windows version too. It prompts you to send the crash dump to the developers which I did. So might not be a rh/fedora problem, but can't hurt to report it I guess. -gene

Same thing here, I've received identical crash dumps twice (the first time I was working in writer, the other OOo was just sitting there with a locked screen).
I've attached the dumps, do we have a bugzilla entry on this yet?

There is a bug report on Bugzilla about this. It was also mentioned in the OOo mail list. Only suggestion so far is to dump the RH version and use the OOo original version.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=171873
Add to the growing list with any details.

Thanks Robin,
Nothing to add really, the stack trace attached to the bug report is the exact same thing I'm getting. Will wait for the update so we can track this down.

Hi, on some other messages in the list I read that it's better to remove OOO from fedora and install OOO from the official site.
It seems not to solve the problem, even if the crashes are less frequent. It hurt a lot becose it's not possible to recovery and all the changes are loss.
But I noted that disabling all about the auto spell check seems to solve the problem.
I had a Calc opened for 10 hours without a crash, and the same file with speecheck enabled crashed randomly in few minutes.
I hope it is usefull for all fedora users, and who had opened the bugzilla to OpenOffice team can try to tell them this info.

I have seen crashes on the same document in 25 seconds and 3 hours. Same machine, same document, same configuration. It is random so your test may or may not show the problem.
I have seen the application just die while working on something else.
Did you try the official version from openoffice. org?

how to debug linux software:
1. install debuginfo packages for the components you want to debug
2. run gdb with em, heres a sample session:
gdb /path/to/binary <- opens the binary with the debugger run <- starts the binary in the debugger <comment> if it halts during execution without giving a backtrace use the command "cont" over and over again until it really crashes.</comment> bt <- once you reached the crash situation this command will show you the backtrace. thats what developers need to see what went wrong.

I actually have ran a backtrack on the crash, well my wife has and it was the same as reported already.
Using gdb is slow for her to start and she doesn't like it so she won't use it.
If I could automate it and give her an icon to start OOo under gdb, it would be great. Until then, it isn't going to happen.
FWIW, on Sunday, OOo ran for over three hours without crashing well she was writing.
I am learning about the debugger when I have time. I like the idea as I used to use strace in the past. Robin

I know that is random, but I have a document that crashes everytime I go up and down with mouse. It do not crashes without spell check, and official version of OpenOffice 2.0 (English).
But I think that the problem is in the localization module, because with OOO from fedora repo, without the Italian module (openoffile.org-langpack-it.i386) it works very well. With the module installed and spell check disabled I see less crashes, but I got the segmentation fault closing OOO.
I hope this is usefull.

To be honest, it would be more useful in the Red Hat Bugzilla, especially if you could add this document (or one that makes the program crash in the same way) so Red Hat developers could see what it was doing wrong.
Thanks,
James.
I 've tried the open office 2.0 writer, I got it "freeze" many times, until I switched to JRE 1.5 , now everything seems to be working fine .
