In most cases, codecs are software pieces that take a video/audio stream, and create the output audio/video out of it. In short, if you want to play a media player stream you need the appropriate software library to decompress it and turn it back into the original video/audio.

Codec is short for Coder-Decoder. for a given media format, there are often multiple encodings available, each requiring a different codec.
