?? What happens if you run /sbin/ldconfig manually? Segfault during ldconfig has nothing to do with kdeaddons, but can occur with unstable hardware and damaged systems.

Its a remote location - I will need to wait till somone is there to deal with any issues ... I will try a ldconfig -p later

ldconfig -p works fine

Why option -p? Typical rpm post-install scripts don't run ldconfig with option -p.

i wanted a simple test ... at least the read worked. What do you think would be a better test?
After reboot and a rpm -e here and there I did manage to get things updated.

To execute manually the commands from the kdeaddons post-install script (see rpm --query --scripts kdeaddons), where the first line runs the full /sbin/ldconfig command.
That is because you complained like this:
Updating : kdeaddons ##################### [ 88/171] /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.60994: line 1: 15897 Segmentation fault /sbin/ldconfig

A segfault like that can be completely unrelated to the update packages.
After reboot and a rpm -e here and there I did manage to get things updated.
Sounds weird.
