I took another go at it, uninstalled the RedHat version of OO, downloaded and installed the RPMS from OpenOffice.org (version 2.0.1-1.i586) and so far they seem to work fine. It does not setup the OO shortcuts in KDE that the RH version does, otherwise it is fully functional.
The question remains: Why is the RedHat version of the binaries not working?

Tried both Arthur's and Thad's suggestions,
When launched from the console (/usr/bin/oowriter) there are no status messages in the console.
I also tried uninstalling all oo packages and reinstalling only the basic packages (without the language packs) to no avail.
OO is still exhibiting the same symptoms.
Any other suggestions?

OOO's version sets up the menus if you install the openoffice.org-redhat-menus rpm.
