bitmap font error on F38

Hi,

I am also having the following error with pdflatex upon upgrading to F38 from F37.

pathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 1+120/600 --dpi 720 eurm10
 mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for eurm10.
 mktexpk: perhaps eurm10 is missing from the map file.
 kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log.
 (see the transcript file for additional information)
 !pdfTeX error: pdflatex (file eurm10): Font eurm10 at 720 not found
  ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced!

How do I get around this issue?

Hi,

This error appears to perhaps be coming from including texlive-upgreek (which I am using in my document). Removing this call from the LaTeX document gets around this issue, but of course produces errors of upgreek characters not being found. Something appears to have changed from F37 to F38 with this LaTeX TeXlive package.

Any suggestions? Happy to provide more information.

Where did you get texlive-upgreek?  I don't see it in Fedora.

Do you have the texlive-amsfonts package installed?  That seems to be
the package that contains eurm10.afm.

Thanks, it appears that upgreek.sty is in texlive-was-9, but is not on F38. It is a F37 package.

Yes, I appear to have.

However, there is a version difference with the one in F37, where upgreek still works.

$ sudo dnf install texlive-amsfonts
 Last metadata expiration check: 2:12:18 ago on Tue 25 Apr 2023 09:00:08 AM CDT.
 Package texlive-amsfonts-9:svn29208.3.04-60.fc37.noarch is already installed.
 Dependencies resolved.
 Nothing to do.
 Complete!

However, both systems happen to have the same file, however, the F38 upgraded machine (from F37) gives the error.

$ ll /usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/fonts/afm/public/amsfonts/euler/eurm10.afm
 -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 6.8K May 12  2012 /usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/fonts/afm/public/amsfonts/euler/eurm10.afm

However, my problem with the font error continues on the F38 machine.

Where does this come from?

That works on my F38 machine.  Does this turn up anything?

find /usr/share/texlive -name *.rpmnew

I'm especially interested in /usr/share/texlive/web2c/updmap.cfg.  If
there's an rpmnew version, you might have to fix that up before your
example will work.

No, I get a blank. Nothing comes back (just the cursor).

This file does not exist on my system (both F37 or F38).

TeX uses fontmap files that should tell pdflatex to use eurm10 font data,
which includes .PostScript (.pfb format) files.   Sometimes users run
things that generate fontmap and format files in their user directory and
which then hides recent changes to the system files.

OpenType supports upright variants:

Your example "works for me" in Debian with their TeX Live packages, and on
Fedora using CTAN TeX Live 2023.  The eurm10 fonts are present, but I
didn't have
upgreek.sty.

Check that the generated fontmap has eurm10 entries:

Note that support for PostScript fonts is disappearing, so it should not be
surprising to
encounter surprises when trying to use pfb fonts because fewer people are
using them and discoveriing problems.  Many long-time TeX users
don't really understand font technologies and are resistant to change, but
if
you can switch to OpenType fonts it should reduce surprises as they have
become mainstream.

Thanks for this. There is an example there which essentially rewrites the upgreek variants. I think that I can make it work for me, but!

I see, I have seen publishers that hang on to things far worse. I have many howlers to retell:-)

Anyway, but what surprises me is that someone on this list (Jerry) was able to run the same file on F38. I do not believe that I have anything special locally installed on LaTeX.
