Dear friends:
[Using Scientific Linux, based on RHEEL 4]
I've been trying to install Koffice 1.4 from the source tarball. Config went flawlessly (after many failed attempts). But I ran into a problem during the "make" stage of install.
After 90 minutes of waiting, Koffice failed the "make" phase of installation. Would very much appreciate your help in troubleshooting and correcting this.

This is really not the correct list for you. I would suggest a Scientific Linux list, or perhaps one of the other clones lists (Centos, Tao, Whitebox, etc.). Another option would be a KOffice list.

Why? I suggest you install the rpms provided by kderedhat or rebuild their srpm, but I think ether the fc3 or the rhel4 rpms should work for you.
ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/koffice-1.4/contrib/kde-redhat/ hat/all/
They also have a yum repo, take a look at the Readme.
