Configured FC5 to use my Dell 2005FPW display at 1680x1050. I wind up with the monitor acting like a window on a much larger screen. Moving the mouse to the edges displays everything, but I'm not seeing everything at once.
Has anyone got a working xorg.conf for this monitor?
I dunno if this will help, but I will offer it anyway.
I am running fc4. I updated to 2.6.15-1.1833_FC4smp and downloaded and built an nvidia driver version 8178 iirc and experienced the very same problem, with the very same monitor.
After fooling with my xorg.conf files for several hours, the same file that previously ran my dual monitors perfectly, I downloaded an older version of the nvidia driver 7664 iirc, built it and everything worked fine.
My xorg.conf works fine for the monitor. You might want to check out the posts in the linux section of zd7000forums.com because they run 1650x1080 monitors as well on the zds and if I remember correctly I did some modline commands to figure out how to set up my 2005FPW.

I have it and it works fine after you add the following to your xorg.conf (You should only need 1680x1050 in the Display subsection for 24 bit colour)

With that same config, log in and use Desktop -> Preferences -> Screen Resolution, and try and set it in there, I remember needing to do that.

I tried using "Generic LCD 1680x1050" and any setting that puts the width at 1600 or greater screws up. I wonder if the problem is the Intel graphics controller. The monitor reports being in various modes like 1024x768, despite the setting in xorg.conf.

I have an nvidia card and am using the "nvidia" binary driver. If the "screen resolution" setting did not work I don't really know what you could try next, maybe swap graphics cards to see if that is the problem, maybe your current card cannot handle that resolution, maybe try in 16 bit mode "DefaultDepth 16" in xorg.conf, xdpyinfo may give some extra info on what resolution is running.

The Dell 2405FPW actually requires the video card I mentioned, or a better one. The installation instructions and the website specifications tell you it is needed. (The 30" flat panel needs an even better, more expensive video card.) It works sensationally great on Microsoft Windows XP. I'll probably install Fedora Core 5 late tonight on that machine, format the spare drive, and that will probably get things running again. This time I'll be smart and save my xorg.conf to a backup.

On my dell inspiron 6400 laptop the intel graphics chipset needs a hack to get it to work in 1680 by 1050 -
I added the modeline to xorg.conf as others have mentioned already. I built the 915resolution tool from http://www.geocities.com/stomljen/ I added a line into rc.sysinit just before the echo "Initialising hardware" - /usr/sbin/915resolution 32 1680 1050 > /dev/null 2>&1
I'm using centos 4.3 rather than FC, but I expect they are very similar.

If the vesa driver is being used, I don't think you're going to get better than 1024x768. I'm stuck with it on my desktop until the nvidia binaries work with the kernel again, the nv driver is broken for my card. -Dan

The monitor works fine with Windows, so the card is capable of supporting it. (Intel 82865G... I think)

I have an Intel 865G set to 1280 x 1024 and it works fine. I don't have a super monitor and this setting is max for the display I use. Did you check If the resolution under gnome-display-properties as the console user is set to your desired resolution? This resolution setting might be set to 1024x768 which would display regardless to your highest setting in the xorg.conf file.

To quote the page I linked you to earlier : http://www.geocities.com/stomljen/
915resolution is a tool to modify the video BIOS of the 800 and 900 series Intel graphics chipsets. This includes the 845G, 855G, and 865G chipsets, as well as 915G, 915GM, and 945G chipsets. This modification is neccessary to allow the display of certain graphics resolutions for an Xorg or XFree86 graphics server.
915resolution's modifications of the BIOS are transient. There is no risk of permanent modification of the BIOS. This also means that 915resolution must be run every time the computer boots inorder for it's changes to take effect.

Does anyone have an xorg.conf for a Dell 2405FPW (24" flat panel) which is running as the first of two monitors connected to an Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra card? The other monitor happens to be a low quality NEC 17" flat panel, too.
I jsut got the Dell monitor (it is sensationally nice!) and would like to get it working in FC4. I made the mistake of not saving the original xorg.conf file before turning on the FC4 "Dual head" configuration, and now X won't even start for me.

I struggled with this for a while. It seems to work fine (but slow) out of the box with the nv driver, but as soon as soon as I installed the nvidia driver (FX5700) I was stuck with 1680x1200. I finally got it working at 1920x1200 by doing the following: 1) install kmod-nvidia from livna 2) run the nvidia-xconfig utility 3) add the following line to the Screen section of xorg.conf Option "ModeValidation" "NoMaxPClkCheck"
Do a "man nvidia-xconfig" to find out about the command. Step 3 is the critical mojo for getting the full resolution.
I have attached the xconfig file, but you shouldn't need it.
Now if only I could figure out how to get dual screens working on my x86-64/ATI7500 at work....
