I'm trying to install FC8 on my old, creaky Thinkpad A22p (ATI Rage Mobility Rage 3) and the video from the graphical installer is not correct. I get about 1/3 of the orginal screen, then 1/3 of the third 1/3 of screen followed by that 1/3 again.
If I use the text installer, X will not start when running the first time after installing.
TTIA.

it is possible that video drives for your laptop are not available in fc8.
download and burn a 'live cd' for a later version, f11 or f12 or f13 to see how video is handled.
If I use the text installer, X will not start when running the first time after installing.
'X' does not configure to start when a text install is used and sets up a 'level 3' start up.
at login prompt, login as user, at command line, enter 'startx' with out '' to see if 'X' will start.
if it does and all is ok, if not, post back with results.
you can maintain level 3 and use 'startx' for opening desktop.
or, as 'root' user, open '/etc/inittab' and change line;
at 'root' user prompt:
cd /etc vi inittab
press down arrow key to line with 'id:3:initdefault:', move cursor with right arrow key to '3', press <r> key, press <5> key.
to write/save, and exit, press in sequence ':wq' with out ''.
this will change 'id:3:initdefault:' to 'id:5:initdefault:' and thereafter system will boot you in desktop manager for logins.

an addition that i left out, fc8 is a bit old and no longer supported, and has several security bugs.
if live cd for f12 or f13 work, consider using either of them.

James,
My A22p has the same problem. I have had to use the basic (VESA) video driver whenever installing Fedora. A couple of weeks ago I finally found the 'gtf' utility which computed the required modeline. I wrote a custom xorg.conf file for Fedora 13. If Fedora 8 uses xorg (I don't remember), it should work for you.

Does it take a LONG time to boot into X or did I do something wrong?
And what can I do to revert the inittab back so I can mess with this file some more (actually key it into submission.)

determined by cpu speed, memory, hdd speed, and a few other things.
And what can I do to revert the inittab back so I can mess with this file some more (actually key it into submission.)
you can press <tab> or <esc> to interrupt boot screen. at menu prompt, press <e> to edit, cursor down to line starting with "kernel", press <e>.
cursor will be at end of line, press <space> then <1> then <enter> then <b>.
you will boot to 'level 1'.
at 'root' user prompt:
cd /etc vi inittab
press down arrow key to line with 'id:5:initdefault:', move cursor with right arrow key to '5', press <r> key, press <3> key.
to write/save, and exit, press in sequence ':wq' with out ''.
this will change 'id:5:initdefault:' to 'id:3:initdefault:' and thereafter system will boot to command line login.
while at 'level 1', type in "init 3<enter>" to start 'level 3', login.
when logged in, "cd /etc/X11", "su", make what ever changes you wish to 'xorg.conf'. save file.
enter 'exit' or press <ctrl+c> to return to 'user'.
entering 'startx' will start "X" server.
hth.

I thought so. Could not find startx anywhere on the drive. I suspect my install/upgrade was not correct. "Doc" Savage warned me about this. I'm starting over after blowing away the FC8 install.

interesting.
'startx' is/was a part of 'xorg-x11-xinit' package.
that is, that is as it is in current versions sl5.4 that i am running. f12 is still trashed so i can not reply for it.
if you are saying that it was not in fc8, i do not recall, tho i can say that i used it in fc8, as i always boot 'level 3' and i have always used "alias kde='startx'" in my 'bash.rc' file. [i am a lazy typer who like terse.]
script is located as '/usr/bin/startx', possibly you do not have '/usr/bin' in your "PATH", tho i would not think so.
"Doc" Savage warned me about this.
about 'startx' not available or having trouble. i do not recall his post.
I'm starting over after blowing away the FC8 install.
i wish i could run a fedora on my t380ed thinkpad, but not enough memory, so i will be loading 'dsl', when i 'round2it'.
much luck.

James,
My A22p has the same problem.
Re-installed and now my video is still 'messed' up. Where can I find the gtf utility?

It's /usr/bin/gtf. If not installed, 'yum install xorg-x11-server-Xorg'.

James,
No, you don't. If you have /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo, yum will find & fetch it for you.
