i don't see it as a ripoff. even though i do not follow racing, a LOT of
people do. think about all the publicity from TV and spectators. that
sort of advertising does work.

Happy Farm. If I can get a thousand users to donate a dollar each, we're
in business. There are 5 goats total, each a likely candidate for the
paint job. For the low price of 5 grand, to get them all painted up and
on youtube, yours truly will be in the pictures wearing cowboy boots and
long johns, -at- -no- -extra- -charge-!

an open mind about doing things that apparently most Linux
users think are stupid.
The problem with the Linux community is that most use the
software because it is free and they are too cheap to give
a couple bucks to help advertise.

I have no take from that project. I have ambition and

Having been to several 'indy' events I think they MAY be aiming at the
'elietst' crowd and the larger corporate owners.
although i cant think of a single company that sponsored a car BEFORE it had the worlds
ear. Home Depot, Lowes, STP etc.
It is ALSO a quick way to generate LOTS of cash. most sponsors in that league would think
nothing of throwing half a mil in advertising to a race team, unfortunately they are
appealing to a community of millions of individuals on the HOPE that several hundred
thousand will toss in a dollar.
Could be worse, they could be tempting NASCAR. Can you imagine Cooter and Skeeter the 1st

I hate to wade in here, but CDW sponsors a number of cars (CHAMP, NASCAR
[ugh!], ALMS, Speed World Challenge, etc.), as do Compuware and several
others that don't "have the world's ear" (and they still may not). ACS
Racing (fairly well known in GT racing) is owned by Applied Computer
Solutions and one of their cars is driven by the founder of ACS (Steve
Davis).
Oracle, Dell and a bunch of others also sponsor cars, so I kinda find
this argument a bit specious. Then there are sponsors that I still
don't know what the devil they are. Do you know who InDeck (Paul
Tracy's sponsor in CHAMP) is?

My suggestion to our local Linux user group was to examine setting up
a Freedom Toaster in our area (http://www.freedomtoaster.org/). If
you read up on it you'll see that it is best deployed in an area
deprived of high speed. This provides them with a way to get large
ISOs (i.e. FOSS such as Linux distros, OpenOffice, whatever) in a
bandwidth starved zone. This wouldn't cost too much to deploy (I
suspect the cabinet cost as much as the equipment inside given you
don't need bleeding edge technology to make this work), and allows you
to introduced Linux to the public in that area and FOSSoftware in
general (which brings them back to Linux OS most times).
This could be accomplished with the sponsorship of a local company
(Linux consulting company, a 2nd hand computer store, or some other
such company that would have an interest in seeing such a project
succeed, perhaps even the local library or municipal council would
have grant money for such an initiative in these low bandwidth areas).
I have to agree that although Linux would get a lot of exposure, it's
not the right audience. Now if this was at a national or
international IT event then it would be a better target audience. If
you attend a Linux conference and you see a large banner at the
entrance for art supplies (not quite the right comparison I realize as
Linux is an OS but also represents a philosophy, but you get the
idea), will that have any significant marketing value? Odds are most
Linux geeks would have no interest in it at all. Well odds are most
NASCAR fans will have minimal interest let alone knowledge of Linux.
Some would probably scoff at it and say that they misspelled LINEX
(the company that does spray on bed liners which also has applications
for national defense/terrorist protection according to a show I saw on
it on Discovery Channel). Now that would be a better fit for NASCAR,
a company with that type of product.
Not that there isn't an opportunity to milk that exposure for all that
it's worth by soliciting help from SuSE, Red Hat, and/or Ubuntu for
example in running ads during the televised race or contributing
towards the $350,000. But I suspect their marketing people will tell
them they wouldn't get good bang for their buck. Which is what many
seem to be saying here.

to have good marketing and that is where the community as a

They think eventually people will come around. If people

I had heard about Linux but it was from FUD spinners. Linux
is a hacker OS... that is not good... it is free so it
can't be any good, because it wasn't designed by
professionals... Blah, blah, blah!
It was only when a couple geeks that I knew came along and
said try Linux because it is stable no BSOD, it is robust,
it is secure, it is safe from worms and viruses, it will do
anything that Windows can do, it has an office suite, you
can surf the web, do e-mail. It is an easy download and
install. So I did and I have not looked back.
Yes, marketing works, but you do have to pitch to the
right market. Is car racing full of computing
enthusiasts, or car enthusiasts?
I would say that most people that go to a race are not car
enthusiasts but do like to watch a race.
Linux is something for
computing enthusiasts, not just computer users. Windows
and MacOS is for them.
I some what agree, but you do not have to be a computing
enthusiasts to use Linux. Compared to a lot of you I am
just a computer user, but I have been using Linux for five
years and won't use Windows unless I am forced too.
There's little point in being a
clone of them.
agree, and Linux is not and won't be a clone.
Where's the benefit. You're no-longer an
alternative.
The benefit is Linux still will be an alternative.
I have learned a lot more about computers since moving to
Linux than I ever knew or would have know using Windows.
I have learned how to do things using Linux that I could not
figure out using Windows because it was too complicated.

This whole thing smells of marketing scam to me. It would be one thing if
it was a group I trusted raising money, but these people are unknown to
me. And the marketing guy saying that "Something must be done! This is
something, therefore we must do it!" only adds to my opinion of scammage.

I don't know what this is all about and I don't know this
person so it must be a marketing scam. That is a really
poor way to view things.

Why is that so Bad?
Its important because it takes marketing and exposure to
advance anything. Which camp are you in the one that wants
to see more people use Linux or the one that does care if
more people use Linux?
For $300,000 I could buy a lot of beer and/or cider at user group meetings
and generate a lot more good will than driving a car around a strip of
asphalt.

If you only have Linux users at those meetings how does that
advance the spread of Linux? It isn't about hanging out
with the current users and having a good time drinking and
talking about Linux. High I'm a Linux user and I just want

IMHO, that's doubtful. Folks at user group meeting tend to already know
about Linux. If the Linux car wins/places/shows at Indy, $300,000 will
be a small price for the good will it will generate. BTW, it's no easy
feat to drive an Indy car around a strip of asphalt ;-)
