Just wanted to add a "me too", so you wouldn't feel lonely.

Check you cards. If you have a PCI card with problems, udev will never complete or take too long.
Once, one of my sound cards became "loose", and udev hanged forever.

Everything was OK and fast with f8.
So?

Did the update involve moving the computer box about? It's a common enough thing for an install to involve shifting things around, and that can dislodge cards if they don't fit snugly.

Even without moving it, I've noticed a distinct tendency in the machines at work for hardware failures to happen at the exact same time as software upgrades. I think the hardware deliberately waits for new software to fail, just to maximize confusion :-).

You get the same with electronics engineering. While you're prototyping, and it's a rat's nest of components cobbled together on the bench, it works. But try and put it in a box, and make it neat, and it stops working. Or it gets faulty lid syndrome - it only works when the lid is taken off, so there must be something wrong with the lid... ;-)
We've all had one of them, haven't we? (Waits for Gene to chime in.)

The laptop was installed on my desk. I started f8 in order to save some config files. I stopped f8. I installed f10. I did not move the laptop, no earthquake, no nuclear tests around, I did not even close the lid....
Oh! Sorry! I opened the dvd tray.
