best supported under FC4.

Wrong link, the gphoto2 supported camera list is at:

Additionally, any camera that acts as an USB mass storage device 
is supported, see:

You can go around the problem, by buying an USB card reader.

Beware! Linux does not see all USB card readers correctly.

Mine is from Radio Shack - it's called a Dazzle Hi Speed USB 2.0 reader.
Supports a bunch of card types.

FC3 it would crash the anaconda installer but worked flawlessly if
attached post install.
FC4 it just works, does not crash installer.

As I am looking at this same thing, I actually emailed the manufacturer 
of the camera I am looking at and got a quick response.  The Pentax 
*istDS complies with the USB Mass Storage Device standard. (so they say)

It would depend on your requirements.  We use Nikons at work and I have 
not had any problems.  The biggest issue will be the if the RAW format 
of the files is supported.  I have yet to try this.

There was a commercial program that Pentax referred me to.

Pentax 1stDS works great also with RAW files.
You have to install the UFRAW plugin for Gimp.That's all

I've been using my Canon 20D with Linux and shoot almost entirely in
their RAW format (.cr2 files).  Bibble is very nice and has a nice
front-end too.

If you want to go on the less expensive end, check out dcraw
(http://www.cybercom.net/~dcoffin/dcraw) and it's associated programs.
There's a plugin that'll work with GIMP too.  While it's a good RAW
converter, I find it's a bit slow and converts things kind of dark, but
I'm pretty sure I could have made things better had I just spent more
time tweaking it.

Thanks for the post.  I'm looking to get a 20D this week or next. 
I've been saving up and reading reviews for a few months now.  I
figure it's worth the extra money over the XT, but I'm not sure I want
to spend the extra money for the 30D.

Do you still like Bibble over the GIMP?  I had never heard of Bibble
before this weekend, but I've now heard a few nice things.

Thanks for the tip about the GIMP plugin for RAW files.  I'll have to
go look that one up.
