I don't want this to come off as some dopey cheerleading. But I'm just happy Red Hat decided that forking the former RHL into commercial and open-source entities was worth their time. They could just as easily have picked up their ball and gone to court the enterprise crowd. But they didn't. And that says everything to me.
Amen to that. It made worthwhile all the args I had with SuSe and Debian ppl at college and work over the time

I second that!
And I don't fault them for being hard nosed about their revenue stream. I'm astonished ans delighted that they have finally found a way to make money from free (as in beer AND in freedom) software. If they continue to pull profitable quarters out of such a dismal economy, they will have vindicated Free Software as a viable base for business. And though supporting the communities surrounding that software is critical to their products, I get the strong impression that they are doing it first and foremost because they believe it's The Right Thing To Do. Way to go!
Now, if you could just drop the price .. 8)

And another thanks for putting together an easy to install, functional beta distribution. After a few hiccups everything I really need is working great.
I also think the fedora.redhat.com site is very well done and it was definitely worth waiting for.

While that's true, it's not the only reason. Fedora is also done because people believe it is a necessary thing to do.
I mean, how could you have an open source product without open source development ?
Pardon my ignorance, but how do you mean free as in beer and freedom?
I think I understand what you are saying, but not enough to define it for someone else.
Thanks, Buck

I know Red Hat has been seeing me waiver a bit as I try to sort this all out, but I, at least in principal, agree with the author. Red Hat's decision is a good business decision. It lets them focus on their profit operation and supports the open source project for the rest of us. It may be due to selfish motivation, i.e. they can benefit from it, but unless I am wrong, they could have left the Fedora project in a position where it doesn't release an actual Linux but gives them the open source code to work with. (No doubt, I'll be corrected or clarified here).

The English language lacks here, only having one word "free" and two entirely different meanings. The free software movement has adopted the phrase, "Free as in speech, not free as in beer."
Free as in speech, cf. libre in Spanish, is about freedom.
Free as in beer, cf. gratis in Spanish, is about not paying for something. It's also about a good time. :)
