uname -s gives a great deal of information about the kernel...

how can i tell which version of FC i have on a box??

Is that FC2 or FC4? I'm assuming FC2.

Hi Graham. I'm on FC2 at the moment, and rpm -q fedora-release gives me the 
same (fedora-release-2-4), which doesn't make a lot of sense . If you look 
in /etc/fedora-release , or /etc/redhat-release, you will see a number. for 
FC2 obviously that is a "2" .

It makes perfect sense if you remember that it is the version-release of
an RPM package.  Take for example:

httpd-2.0.46-57.ent

Package: httpd
Version: 2.0.46
Release: 57.ent

To get just a simple number, you could do something like:

rpm -q --queryformat '%{VERSION}\n' fedora-release

The official way to find it is to "cat /etc/redhat-release".  On Fedora
machines, /etc/redhat-release is a symlink to /etc/fedora-release.

Alternately, you can "cat /etc/issue".

I wouldn't bother with looking at the RPM version number.
