Hey mates,

I use Xine to play all of my files, rarely will one refuse to play.
If you are interested, get the essential codecs package from this website: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html
Then, dumb the files into /usr/lib/codecs.
Tell Xine to look into that directory for the codecs. You'll have to tell it you are an uber super geek though.
Works for me, maybe it will work for you too.

Totem-xine conflicts with totem. need to do
yum remove totem yum install totem-xine
(or at least I had to do so with FC4.)

Thanks Paul, Your suggestion still applies for FC5. The conflict still exists between totem and totem-xine. I also needed to remove rhythmbox in order to remove totem.

I had that problem, too. I just saw it worth it to use kaffeine instead, since it links to the xine libraries by default (I also didn't want to sacrafice rhythmbox for totem). -Steven

I typed xine in a shell and noticed a message regarding having an older version of gnome-screensaver installed. I have no gnome-screensaver installed.
Run totem from a terminal and it should give you some information as to why it is failing. I am playing a DVD burned off of a pioneer recorder using DVD-RW discs and no encryption. Are you trying an AVI file? I have none of them knowingly.

I have most multimedia versions installed of all programs. xine is working fine for me. The video seems better and interaction with keeping screensavers at bay while the movie is running. Totem-xine looks a bit awkward and the video seems less. Also it uses gnome-screensaver which I do not have installed. It does not keep the screensaver paused as xine does.
Mplayer works fine when the others were down during development testing.
mplayer is a good choice if you do not want to figure out what is casing the error for the other choices.

Is there a reason why you needed totem-xine in the first place? Did you try using the gstreamer-ffmpeg and gstreamer-plugins-ugly from livna?

The reason was my totem player didn't want to play avi's, so people just suggested I use totem-xine... but the latter did not work well with my computer...
That's about it

Agreed 100%.
Totem sucks big time. Helix sucks big time.
Xine is OK.
Mplayer rocks. XMMS rocks.
I removed totem and helix, then installed Mplayer, Kplayer, and XMMS from Livna.
Now all my media files play, AVI, WMV and MPG on Mplayer and MOV, RMM on Kplayer.
Very few unexpected issues with FC5 so far, and I am VERY glad that Extras was available right from the start and Livna before I needed it. Having done a clean install of the system then, plugging in my media drives, caused a bit of SELinux hell, but once I dealt with that, all is good, next time I will not enable the media drives to mount at boot in fstab until I have manually run fsck from a running system. All my install problems were due to FC5 thinking that all my media drives needed to be tested, the whole TeraByte, yeesh, and it was not showing the progress, so I could not tell what was going on.
Now all is well, and I can finally get back to editing and transcoding all the stuff I have recorded, so I can burn them to DVD's.
PS has any one had any problems burning DVD data discs yet?
