I sometimes find when my laptop becomes very slow
and I run "top" to see what is happening
that the culprit is "beagled-helper".
I don't recall ever starting beagled,
and it does not seem to be listed by chkconfig.
Is it now a standard part of Fedora?
Is it mandatory to run it?
What exactly does it do?
"man beagled" says it is "a system for searching
and managing your personal information space",
which I don't find very informative, or convincing.

Its one of the various desktop search engines around - You know, the
ability to search through all your files, emails, conversations etc. for
whatever criteria you want. If you like that sort of thing then that is
what it does.
very badly in my opinion - it is well known to be a resource hog (also
it is based on the mono package, which in my opinion is a bad design
choice and mono should never have really been allowed to come into
existence).
My solution is
yum remove beagle
and you will never see it again.
FWIW, on ubuntu 7.10 they have dropped beagle in favour of tracker (by
default). This aims to do exactly the same thing, but is written in C
instead. Whilst I don't really use these features myself, when running
ubuntu I've yet felt the need to remove it, as it is much less resource
hungry.
Hopefully fedora will go the same way and dump beagle sometime soon.

coffee. I use Google Desktop and I have added /etc to its index. It
makes it very easy to find find, for example, all files that make
reference to "ath0" or contain "radeon".
And we won't speak of "senior moments" and the last minute panic of
finding that report or picture of the grandkids.

I've installed Google Desktop Search and am quite happy with it, other
than it's plugin for Thunderbird. That's a real hog.

Beagle is not loaded in F8 by default. gnome-search-tool uses
traditional Unix tools (find, grep, locate) to search. There are
advantages and disadvantages to such an approach, compared to indexing
engines like beagle and tracker.

Remove it if you value your cpu cycles its a resource hog, I'd also ditch the
mono-core it sits on too and all its dependants YMMV.

coffee. I use Google Desktop and I have added /etc to its index. It
makes it very easy to find find, for example, all files that make
reference to "ath0" or contain "radeon".

Could you give a concrete example of its use?
I looked at the URL above, and read half-a-dozen pages,
but did not come across a single example saying something like
"To do xyz give the command abc".
It simply said, repeatedly (and like you), "beagle is very useful".

help much to know that your fedora-list mbox matches a phrase without
knowing which message it is, if you have a few hundred messages.
On the other hand, indexers:

- Index only what they recognize.

I can see your point for system-wide indexes that index user files as
well (such as locate). Beagle indexes are created per userid, so I
don't think they can look in other users' /home, and others can't look
at your indexes.

drives must be encrypted if they have "identifiable data" (what a

If Red Hat/Fedora did not have what appears to be a "No crypto but ours(NSS)"
stance[1], it might be possible to have support for encryption (using
government supplied FIPS 140 compliant crypto devices, i.e., the CAC in the
U.S) for many things[2] including a couple of encrypted file systems[3][4]. Or
if they would at least incorporate those until they figure out how to make NSS
work, it would be nice. Even if those solutions are not FIPS approved, it
would allow an attempt at due care|diligence, to be easily worked out.

Well, not really familiar with KDE, but, also, I've noticed, that, in
Gnome, on the top menu, go to: Places>search and it opens up the beagle
interface.
I suppose it works the same for KDE? Try finding a 'search' option in
your main menu.

Yes, he has assumed you used gnome. Under KDE you can, if you want,
install kerry. Run this and it gives you roughly the same thing (please
note I am not recommending this application...)
Alternatively you can always fire up the gnome application - at the
commend line it is called beagle-<somethingorother> - Just type beagle
and hit tab, it should be obvious.

First of all, you have a GUI, which, in

The search is lightning fast and lets me look into documents, emails,
websites, etc.
For example, I look the for the phrase "birthday" and it lists all my
documents that contain that phrase, like: emails, pidgin logs, pdfs,
open office docs, websites, etc.
Before this, you have to activate it and, optionally, set the private
folders (folders I don't want it to look at) and "other" directories
(directories outside my user dir that I want it to index). By default,
it only indexes my user directory.
Also, you can "filter" the types of document(s) you want it to look at.
For example, if I wanted "birthday" to be searched only at my emails, I
would filter them and that's it!
It's amazing.
Try runing, on your Comand Line Interface (CLI) man beagled
I, ussually, for debuging purposes, run beagled --fg so it tells me what
is it doing and any error that may surge
It simply said, repeatedly (and like you), "beagle is very
useful".
