It would make a difference in my decision to buy the phone if I can access my memory card on the phone as a USB device.
Anyone?
I got mine from verizon, they have intentionally crippled it so you can't do that, among other things. Try another service provider.

With a little help from some forums about Motorola and moto4lin (http://moto4lin.sourceforge.net/) you might tweak it to act as it should. :)

Ok. Let me rephrase the question. I see that the phones take a little memory card (with which I have no experience). If I get an sd memory card for the phone and a card reader to plug into my linux platform, will the sd card appear as a mountable disk the same way that a thumb drive appears? (I could live with that.) Switching away from verizon btw is not an option. In this neck of the woods, they're the only provider that really works.

Let me ask a question: can a Linux or Windows PC or laptop still use it for a wireles Internet connection with Verizon? And what cable would you need to buy (cheap) if it did?

Get a $10 USB card reader. Then plug that into the PC and you can use the disk as if it were a flash disk.
The big problem is that the Software in the phone won't cooperate with files you simply copy on there. It won't play mp3 files as music files, but it will play them as ringtones.
Like you, I'm stuck with Verizon, but am not too happy about what they did to this phone.
I've found the only way to get songs into the phone is to run the windows media player version 10, which of course requires windows. I've tried moto4lin and bitpim in Linux and neither work, despite many many hours of trying.
Bitpim in Windows does work, and you can use it to copy your addressbook out of the phone.
But the only songs it will play are the wma files from Media player. If you have mp3 in linux directories, you can use the Iexplore program in windows to access those files, and Media player will convert them when you try to put them in the phone.

I take the SD card out of my motorola krzr and use a Sandisk USB card reader to pull images off.

Yeah; I do the same with my LG VX8700 (also Verizon). The only bad thing about it on mine is that the SD card is right between the battery and the phone, so I have to disassemble the back of it to get at the card and take the pictures out. Good thing I opted for the 512M model, though; so I don't have to do this very often. :)
The SD card reader and 512M SD card were optional add-ons and costed about 25 USD together when I bought the phone about one and a half months ago. When plugged-in, it's a simple mass storage device (FAT32 filesystem) so there is no need for extra drivers or image extraction tools: Just drag-and-drop to your pictures directory on your hard disk or into F-Spot, etc. and you're set. :)

Yes it is possible if the carrier has not messed with it. I bought mine without a contract so it's a virgin one with all the goodies intact. On the phone you need to configure the memory card as "Memory Card" and then all you need to do is connect the USB cable between the phone and PC. The memory card will show up similar to a USB stick.
FWIW I love the design of the phone but I really hate the software. It's dead slow, very far from Nokia quality/easiness/snappiness and the latest firmware did not make any difference. I am going back to either Sony Ericsson or Nokia. My old Sony Ericsson K750i worked like a charm with FC6 (syncing via Bluetooth, access mem card as a USB device). My Nokia 6230 before that was a piece of crap because it did not support syncing with Multisync (now OpenSync) via Bluetooth over IrMC with Evolution. So wether Nokia is an option will be determined by their support for Bluetooth over IrMC on the phone I am interested in. No support, no sale (are you listening Nokia?!).
If you want to be able to sync your calendar, phone contacts etc with Evolution via Bluetooth I recommend you verify that the phone(s) you are interested in support(s) Bluetooth over IrMC . Alternatively you can setup the cool stuff from Funambol and sync it over an Internet connection.
