Last time I did this, I wound up just nuking the ~/.kde directory and starting over. Ever since then, I back it up!

Well, then deleting ~/.kde wont do anything! I don't know where gnome keeps its settings, but see if there is a ~/.gnome directory. There will not be any need to reinstall.
I probably shouldn't have suggested that so fast, though. Doing so will return Gnome to it's default state- all your settings will be lost. You could also rename the directory, say, to ~/.gnome-backup so that you could recover individual files if need be.
Looking through the archives, I found another user who accidentally removed the gnome taskbar. Yep, he nuked the settings and started over, like I did: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=fedora-list&w=2&r=1&s=deleted+ta...

As your normal user, in an xterm while your logged into gnome, try running the command gnome-panel and see if that gets you started (it was exit if there is a panel already running). Here are a couple of files that I saw that might help if you have them.
/home/mike/.gnome2/session /home/mike/.gnome2/main
Or are you looking for something else? Because I remove the panel that is at the top after install and use the one at the bottom, and I customize it to my liking.

Are you referring to the Panel at the bottom of the desktop screen? Perhaps, you turned on auto-hiding by accident? You can check by just hovering your mouse pointer near the very bottom of the screen.
no its not hidden, just nothing there. actually lost both for a bit but managed to recover the top one to a useable state but not the bottom, cant get the program taskbar back thanks david
