Unknown is an infidel!
If one knows how to work with it then VI doesn't corrupts your data... think 'Unknown' needs to read the manual too ;-)

To get into --INSERT-- mode you need to press "i" for insert or "a" for append. then to get back into command mode press Esc

I find the pdf file, "vicheatsheets" located at, techrepublic.com handy when working with vi. Eight pages of useful information :-) I can send it to you via email if you like?
Note, Evince does not play nice with this file so, you'll need Acrobat Reader for viewing/printing out.
Thanks and Regards

Sounds like you want to see the mode displayed at the bottom of the screen.
in vi: :set showmode
add this to .vimrc or to an EXINIT setting in your .bashrc file

That document has been revised & now has 14 pages of info. Current document is, vi_reference_2.pdf. Also, the document 15_vi_tips.pdf is worth a download. BTW, both docs play nice with Evince :-)

Can't help you other than say that it works here (and always has for the benefit of those who've pointed out that the o/p should be pressing "i" to insert text - pressing INSERT once puts it in insert mode, a second time for replace mode (and toggles back and forth from there). Does the INSERT key work but simply does not display the -- INSERT -- text at the bottom?
Is vim still set up as alias for vi (either type alias and enter to view aliases, or which vi which will tell you that vim is the alias and where the binary for it is located)?
Does it do this for other users? Can you create a new user and try it out?
