Hi all,
I've just installed the 64 kernel FC4 on my AMD Athlon 64 X2 with a Asus AX800XL (which is a Radeon X800 card). For a driver I used the propriety one from ATI so I could play freedroidRPG (it needs 3D acceleration).
What happens is, the /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows the following messages:
(II) Loading sub module "fglrxdrm" (II) LoadModule: "fglrxdrm" (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/linux/libfglrxdrm.a (II) Module fglrxdrm: vendor="FireGL - ATI Technologies Inc." compiled for 6.8.0, module version = 8.16.20 ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 0.2 (II) fglrx(0): Depth moves disabled by default (**) fglrx(0): Capabilities: 0x02008000 (**) fglrx(0): CapabilitiesEx: 0x00000400 (**) fglrx(0): cpuFlags: 0x4000001f (**) fglrx(0): cpuSpeedMHz: 0x000003ed (==) fglrx(0): OpenGL ClientDriverName: "fglrx_dri.so" (**) fglrx(0): UseFastTLS=0 (**) fglrx(0): BlockSignalsOnLock=0 (==) fglrx(0): EnablePrivateBackZ = NO (--) Depth 24 pixmap format is 32 bpp (II) do I need RAC? So, bottom line is, I have no 3D accelleration because the /dev/dri/card0 is missing? Or, is 3D hardware acceleration just not available for Radeon X800 cards?
If I start freedroidRPG anyway, it ends my X-session immediately (really: a fraction of a second) and I am presented a logon screen......
Does anyone know what is wrong here?
Guus.

Do a modprobe fglrx and look at the output and/or the output of dmesg after it.
Precompiled packages of the new ati-fglrx driver should be available soon from rpm.livna.org. Maybe those work better for you.

Thank you for the tip. I was able to yum install ati-fglrx.x86_64 from livna. Still, it didn't work. I strongly suspect that 3D hardware acceleration is not possible with the ATI Radeon X800XL video card. If anyone has it working, could you please respond? Then I'll know it *can* be done.....
Guus.

That's the old driver version, 8.14.13. The new 8.16.20 drivers aren't yet available from livna.

Wait for the new drivers and try again.

Sorry, I was posting based on stale cahced info, the 8.16.20 are now in the repo. X800 series cards are supported according to the ATI release notes, so the problem is elsewhere. Did you install the kernel-module-fglrx-`uname -r` package?

Ahh yes, that was the problem: I should have recounted it her. I found out by accident, because a bootup screen stalled, so that I could actually *read* the messages -- and this was one of them. I have been using Torcs and FreedroidRPG for while now and it works extremely well. Thanks for your hint.
What I wondered about though is some messages during bootup don't appear in any log. This particular message scrolled by so fast, that usually I could not read it. Only one time, for some reason it stalled, so I read the message and I immediately went looking for the kernel-module, I found it, installed it, reboot and it worked! That was real nice!
Ok, so the question is:
1. Why don't all messages during bootup appear in some log? I have searched the logs, like dmesg, message.log and XOrg.0.log, but nothing was there. The only file I could not search, because it was too big was lastlog. Does anyone know how to search a file for which grep reports a memory error? 2. Why are the two driver-packages ati-fglrx and kernel-module-fglrx not dependent on each other? I am probably not the first one to be ignorent of this connection.
Guus - I know, so much questions, so little time......
soon from rpm.livna.org. Maybe those work better for you.
Is is an official site to take rpms from? - I would not to get in a situation again when i downloaded an rpm, having been used expensive traffic, and then it refused to work on my FC4 - because that site was not official or whatever!

In my opinion, no repository other than the fedora.redhat.com are official. You use them as a tool and a convenience. Some can screw you up severely and lead to problems working with other repositories, but that is another thread.
If you are concerned about using other repositories, then contact ATI about their lack of true support for Linux. I feel it would be a waste of time as I went down that route and purchased a nVidia card.
From comments on this list, the livna site is great for their rpms for video drivers. I have not used them yet. Would I trust them? For the ATI drivers, yes. Of course, I won't purchase anything with ATI video anymore.
