Three systems using FC4, all kept up to date. Initially, all three
auto-mounted pen-drives, with a pop-up asking whether to open a file manager
window. Now this only happens in one of them. The drives have to be
manually mounted in the other two.
Clearly something has been changed in two of them, but I don't recall doing
anything that would affect this. Can ayone tell me what it is that sets this
behaviour, and where it can be changed?

Everything looks absolutely fine in there.
BTW, I also have desktop icon for removeable drives checked, but I don't get
one.

You've plumbed the extent of what I've ever had to do on multiple
machines,
running multiple distros (MEPIS, PCLinuxOS, and FC4) - on all these machines,
I've had no issues after getting those settings right - FYI
I actually have more problems with USB externals on my Windows boxes these
days (not pen drives, but, mini-drives in external cases)

running multiple distros (MEPIS, PCLinuxOS, and FC4) - on all these
machines, I've had no issues after getting those settings right - FYI

Thanks for trying. It's odd. It worked as expected at first, so it must be
something that I've changed, but I can't think what. It's not the end of the
world - I can manually mount, but it's just a tad less convenient.

I don't think it is anything _you_ changed. I had the same experience
and have just lived with it (although it is irritating). On mine they
seem to auto-mount but I never get the desktop icon. If I manually do
an unmount then remount (from the CLI) the icon shows up.

OK - so maybe an update broke it.
I had the same experience
and have just lived with it (although it is irritating). On mine they
seem to auto-mount but I never get the desktop icon. If I manually do

It doesn't show up even after that. Ah well, no biggie.

Well, I can't imagine it's that outdated. I'm on 3.5.1 on all
machines. But,
Jeff says he's using gnome, so I guess that's not it. I keep seeing various
issues related to udev on other lists - maybe, something is amiss there.

Hotplug is being discontinued for FC5. Maybe there is interaction
between whatever is going to assume the usb mounting and hotplug trying
to do the mounting. Gnome-volume-manager perhaps.
/proc/bus/usb (hotplug?) will soon be replaced with /dev/bus/usb
(whatever program assumes the action for usb mounts)

What surprised me was that the old laptop still has automounting working,
while the other two boxes don't. All three have FC4, and all are updated
daily.

Been away on holidays and just got back.
This is my experience as well. USB drive works properly on two FC-4
machines but not on a third machine. All updated almost daily. Two
configured almost the same.
Just tried to mount my stick on the machine that does not work.

/media/Robin_Laing for /dev/sda1
The stick is labled as Robin_Laing.
The mount point is in /media but when I type in mount, it isn't listed
at all. df doesn't show anything either.
If I remove the stick, the mount point /media/Robin_Laing disappears.
Something is not tying the /dev/sda1 to /media/Robin_Laing.
I thought the stick was damaged as a Windows user had borrowed it. I
can manually mount the drive.
Are your symptoms the same?
