fsadm resize /dev/mapper/fedora_hpz440/root
did nothing.
Had some space so tried
lvextend -L +10G --resize /dev/mapper/fedora_hpz440/root
which worked.

Yes, "lvextend -L +10G --resize /dev/map…“ is the correct version.
Sometimes it is helpful to have a look into the Fedora Server Edition documentation,
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora-server/
e.g. Virtualization -> Managing virtual machines with Cockpit
I would like to recommend to use Cockpit for such common administration tasks as
recommended. It makes live really much easier. And Cockpit is installed anyway.
