is there any way that we can raw print to printer that attached to winxp from linux using cups,
the problem is that printer linux don't have driver because that's GDI printer (photocopy machine sharp ar-5316)
so the only hope is using xp only as print server
any idea, suggestions please?

Actually I'm not sure it's a forgone conclusion that a gdi printer can't be attached to a linux box, notwithstanding that you should be able to attach to a shared windows print queue using smbclient and submit your job... Then you should be able to send it postscript and let the windows print system rip it for you.
so the only hope is using xp only as print server
any idea, suggestions please?

What do you mean 'raw' printing? You can select 'Generic' 'Raw print queue' as the printer type which will then send whatever you generate to the printer without messing with it.
This does then mean that you need to generate the correct code within the app, and therefore can't use it with a normal app, such as OOo.
Have you looked at the notes for the 'Generic' 'GDI Printer'?
I don't think Joel's suggestion will work because as far as I'm aware, the host Windows PC doesn't do anything with an incoming request except SPOOL it. Therefore sending a postscript doc would only work if the printer supported postscript - at which point we wouldn't be having this thread.
so the only hope is using xp only as print server
any idea, suggestions please?

As other's have said... I don't think there's a way to get this will work. However, it may be an acceptable kludge to set-up a network share on the Windows PC that waits for PDF files, and then prints them through Adobe when they appear.

One item to read is here... http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Generic-GDI_Printer
Also - for the archives...
Many "networked photocopiers" actually speak PCL 3 (set up CUPS to speak to an HP LaserJet 4000). Toshiba and Konica have been known to produce these.
That said, a "GDI" printer is unlikely to speak any standard printer/rastering language.
Hi too,
I'm just curious that is there any open source/commercial windows software to receive raw files from network then print as normal, so there is no different between if the printer is GDI or not
or is cups can running on cygwin?

yes, that what I meant for raw printer from redhat-config-network (FC1)

yes, I can confirmed that in postcript printer can be accept ps, but the printer will be cost more

I did this myself in the oposite direction to allow Windows PCs to create PDF files. There should be no difference doing it this way. Anyway, doesn't acroread read postscript files anyway?

You keep saying 'Raw' files. What do you mean by raw?
I doubt very much that there's anything out there to just sit and listen on the network for print requests.
I've just looked at Adobe acrobat and it doesn't look like it wants to accept command line arguments to print etc., so I don't know hu you'd get it into a batch routine either.

raw? from general driver in redhat-config-network

maybe there is some version cups-lite, that run on windows that can receive files from linux, then throw to windows printer driver to process it, because there is limited windows computer, so maybe it can be used for printer gateway to printer that not yet supported in linux
or maybe is there any suggestion for write this apps what documentation that I should read about? (specification that cups need)

is that meant, that linux document need to sent in sharing directory in windows "samba"?

thank you all, I will try in Monday to see if it's works for me, and I can post here the result

I think this solution will be acceptable for now, waiting for more printer vendor to get natively works for linux

WinXP has a Unix-style lp server available. You have to use the Control Panel "Services" applet to enable it.

Maybe ghostscript? It can run in batch routines and is available for Win32.
