Hi,
When i start my computer and logs in to kde, everything is fine, and I can switch to consoles (alt+ctl+f2 etc.)
If I then try to start totem, or try to acces streaming video in firefox (with mplayer) or similar, kde logs out, and i need to login again. Now after the login it is not possile to go to the consoles. When i try the screen freezes until i go back to kde.
Also, when i try to shutdown after this I can see a title bar of a window with Totem... as the heading. (I cannot se the normal shutdown, (the messages when it shuts down things)

At least you are able to change back to X and run KDE. With a similar card type. I can change from GNOME to a terminal, use the terminal. My problem happens when I change back to the GUI, the upper portion of the screen has residual information. The residual display takes up about the same screen real estate as is occupied by the upper GNOME panel. I need to power off uncleanly in order to escape the resulting lockup.
I run in runlevel 3. Are you starting in graphics mode or to initial terminals? My question is mainly so I can figure which component is most likely causing the malfunction. With you running KDE and having locked terminals, but could return to KDE and I can exit from Gnome to terminal, but not return successfully to the GUI are sort of opposite symptoms for users of similar video cards.
I don't have the problem with totem though as you described.

Generally speaking, such problems have been brought about here by using the wrong framebuffer when I built the kernel. I suspect thats the problem here also. Since its an ati, although not the same as mine, here are the 'FB' options from my working kernel .config for 2.6.11-rc5:
CONFIG_FB=y CONFIG_FB_MODE_HELPERS=y CONFIG_FB_RADEON=m CONFIG_FB_RADEON_I2C=y
Now, as to the actual correctness, damnedifiknow. But its been working here for about a year with no glitches when I switch in and out of X. X is currently the 6.8.1 release from x.org, locally built and has been bulletproof so far.

I get this warning in the kernel log. Feb 26 22:07:17 cornette-fc3-lt kernel: Warning: ATI Radeon IGP Northbridge is not yet fully tested.
I have been using the Fedora binary kernel and the binary xorg-x11 versions. I might try to build a kernel from source and see if something in the configuration of the stock kernel is causing this condition VT to GUI is OK, GUI to VT is OK, but changing from VT to GUI again causes a lockup. The mouse moves around on the GUI, but nothing functions and even ALT-sysreq-b does not break out of the condition.
I can logout of X back to a terminal alright, then get back into X without any problems. I think that going through all the video problems with the radeon 7200 and wth the i810 got me to say, what the heck, at least it works with care.
I'll search for bugs in xorg-x11 website, then if no similar reports do the rebuild of the kernel. The only two modules that lsmod shows that sound related to graphics are a video module and te radeon module. I'll exit the GUI to see if the radeon is still listed in lsmod. I assume that this is the framebuffer module that you are referring to.
Thanks for the hint regarding no problem with a custom built kernel.

A more irretating thing is that Fedora Core 2 worked Excelent!! The only problem there was the TV out and a "second monitor"
The first time after install, I had to enter runlevel 3 to get in the noaccel option in the conf file. But now i boot into runlevel 5 I was so angry at "fedora" so i tryed to install suse 9.2 a couple of days ago. it identifyed my graphics card as ati (with lost of numbers behind it) but in suse it was playing videos, totem was working and so on. My touchpad was also working!! (but not my mouse!)
But why is this display almost stopping working in fedora 3 when 2 was excelent!!! Fedora without the ability to watch videos... hmmmm

I believe the concept was to get xorg-x11 as close to upstream as possible. A lot of videocards suffered from the transition from redhat patched to mostly upstreamed version. This driver did not give me fits when running FC2 either. however, when installing a clean install of FC3, it seemed to exhibit problems. I guess since the problem is here now with the adoption of getting things fixed upstream vs. a heavily patched version, problems need submitted to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/ I am getting ready to search bugs for the radeon card. I'll post if I cross a bug report that sounds similar to the problem you are having.

I think that I had a mess on first boot into FC3 post-install. I did not add the option into my file. I just kept starting X from a terminal, avoided switching video modes and the like. The card works fine otherwise. As a test to see if switching from the GUI to terminal, then back to GUI had anything related to the gnome-panel, I set the upper panel to autohide. When I switched back to the GUI, it occupied the same "real estate" that was occupied by the hiden panel.(very narrow bar, vs normal panel width.) I guess this might mean that the panel might have some influence on the problem that I am getting. As an additional test, I added the Option "NoAccel" to the xorg.conf for my card and it stopped the problem that I got with the lockup. However, it left the screen rather untextured and I will probably revert back to removing the option w/ special care regarding mode switching and changing to the terminal. This option "NoAccel" might be influencing the problem that you are seeing. You might try to change back to starting in runlevel 3, then edit out the option "NoAccel" from Xorg.conf and using startx to start the player. You might see better video performance from the video player, however your problem with not changing back to the terminal would not be addressed. Regarding video players, I installed xine to play DVDs. It works fine for me. The videos play excellent and with much detail. (No additional options in the terminal.)

As a test, I changed my driver to "ati" and it worked pretty much like the radeon driver. I believe that the radeon and the "ati" driver work together. I think the radeon driver calls the ati driver, it might be the reverse situation though. Anyway, with the ati driver, I got the GUI-console-GUI lockup just the same.
But why is this display almost stopping working in fedora 3 when 2 was excelent!!! Fedora without the ability to watch videos... hmmmm
I believe this is regression of a driver. It appears that a bug report should get the problem on the way to a resolution.
Thanks for the input. I was helped out by trying to guide you to a resolution. I don't know if this will help you to get videos playing again with FC3.
Off to freedesktop.org again! - :-)
BTW - resorting to the noaccel option for long term is not a very good solution. When I scrolled down this message, strobing was pretty bad. Normally (for me) there is no such problem with no added entries in xorg.conf

Installed Xine also, since you said it was working excelent at your computer.... But guess.... Same problem as with Totem or the mplayer plugin for firefox. As soon as it is trying to play a movie. X & KDE shuts down.

I'll try xine later using KDE to see if GNOME/KDE differences might be the reason for your failure with video. I cannot verify the reaction of totem. I could not get it to recognize my dvd without changes.
I submitted a bug related to how the driver works in runlevel 3 and without adding Option "NoAccel" added to the kernel. This is the mode that I am currently using. There are some errors reported in the logs attached to the report.

Hi again,
I tried to install gnome also today. I have now tryed all players for both avi & mpeg with different movies under both KDE & Gnome. All of them shuts down my X-server. Which log files can I look in to find some errors?

When your X server is shutdown, you want to check /var/log/Xorg.0.log before you try to restart X again. This file records the sessions and is overwritten when X starts up again.
/var/log/messages shows details of system processes and pretty much records activities on your system.
typing dmesg should show what recently happened on your system.
My diagnosis regarding the problem is that the radeon driver is fouled up and cannot direct render properly. The system then tries this another way and runs off to crashing X land.
I added the zip file containing the dri (still "borken") and the drivers for ati and radeon. This hack works and I can run xfce (used to black screen and lockup) Change to and from virtual terminals and do not have crashes. Also I am not using option "NoAccel", it is not needed. I'm booting in runlevel 3 and using startx. Tuxracer is slow, but does not black screen as it did with the drivers in the rpm.
