Does anyone know any freely downloadable MIDI editors for Linux? I've got Cakewalk Pro Audio for Windows, but I don't like using Windows and use it only when necessary. I like Cakewalk's sheet music-like interface. I like being able to click on a particular area on the page and have the currently selected musical note appear there. Are there any products like this for Linux?

Hi Michael:
I'm just getting started learning lilypond now for typesetting music, and can't answer your specific MIDI-related question, but there are some good resources for linux music and sound at this web site:
There is a list of freely available MIDI editors for linux there.
Hope this helps, Clint

NoteEdit http://tan.informatik.tu-chemnitz.de/~jan/noteedit/noteedit.html
Rosegarden http://www.rosegardenmusic.com/
ObPersonalOpinion
I prefer the former as it's almost as robust as Coda Finale which is my preferred tool under EvilOS
In my search for a Linux MIDI editor I began looking over my Main Menu->Sound and Video->More Sound and Video and discovered an application called KMid. It has an interesting interface, but I can't get any sound. I have a MIDI file that I downloaded a long time ago that I'm using as a test file, and KMidi will play it just fine, but KMid still won't give me any sound. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Michael:
I ran into the same thing with my new box that I installed FC2 on. On my old FC1 box, I have a SoundBlaster Live sound card, which it seems has MIDI support, but my current setup uses an integrated sound card that does not have MIDI support.
So when I created the score in lilypond, I also created a .midi file that I wanted to check out. Kmid wouldn't play it, but I found that timidity would play it!
Do a "which timidity" at a command prompt. See if you have it in /usr/bin. If you do, then try playing the midi file with this command:
timidity nameofthemidifile.midi
Hope this helps, Clint
Is there a way to make MIDI files in KMidi, or at least change the instruments being used in a particular MIDI? I asked to open Timidity Synth from Main Menu->Sound and Video->More Sound and Video, but my hard drive clicked and nothing else happened. I tried running "timidity" from a terminal window and finally got it to work, after consulting its man page. Is there any way to use timidity to write MIDI files?
