Hi,
How do I get to write to a DVD. I put in a blank DVD and I don't get anything. Mount volume says no media, and I cant figure out how to proceed since nothing works.
is this a feature or a bug?
Best, trotter

Hi; a blank CD or DVD has no file sytem on it, so there is no way to mount it. I use K3b under KDE, as a user - NOT root. When you start it up (F->Multimedia->K3b) it will show actions in the lower panel. Click on the "further actions" bar for others.

You can use any of several different programs for writing to discs, they work in different ways, but a basic premise is to assemble a collection of files to be written, then do the writing.
You can even do this from within Nautilus. "Go" to the "CD/DVD Creator" (look in the "Go" menu). There's a spot for assembling your files for burning, you can make directories, too. You can copy and paste, or drag and drop, into it.
If you want to do something more complex, I'd suggest using a program designed for burning. e.g. Gnome baker, XCD Roast, K3B, and lots more.
Hi,
The fundamental problem when I put the DVD in is that none of these programs work . They basically say won't work. I can't figure out what the message says, but I think there is no substantive message beyond error, so there is some problem. Hence I wonder what the problem is.
In the old days before Fedora dumped the reliable mount on /etc/fstab, I did not have a problem. Btw, I am trying all this on Dell Latitude C850.
In particular, this is what I get when i use xcdroast and press the button. Please insert a blank CD-R in the drive. And nothing happens after that.
Any suggestions?
Best wishes, Trotter

Known problem. Unknown is why the hell it persists, release after release when the fix is so simple. The memory per process limit imposed is to fix a runaway process so it can't take the machine clear down. That's very rare, and you will normally get a pretty good trace pointing fingers at the guilty item so IT can be reported and hopefully fixed ASAP. Unforch, the default buffer size k3b asks for exceeds this limit by about 50 times. While burning, it uses a considerable amount of memory for the write cache.
The fix? Put this line in at the bottom of the file in your ~/.bashrc
ulimit -l unlimited
End of problem.

That should take care of the /warning/ about mlockall(2), but it won't help with the /error/ "Cannot load media". WAG: I wonder if starting with the tray open would help?

I didn't for me. I think the problem may be that two applications are competing for access? I have not had time to dig into it, but I know if you drag files/folders to the blank media icon, you then get the option to burn them on my laptop where k3b does not work...

The last time I ran into that problem Tony, I trashcanned the drive, it had decided it didn't like dvd's of any persuasion. The new one Just Works(TM) with the same spindle of raw disks the old one got all upset about.

It's likely to be a sick drive. You can run cdrecord with the -atip or -prcap options and see what you are told.
That copy of cdrecord is *very* old, have you upgraded since you did the install? Is that really what is the latest in FC6, I thought they were using Wodim (a hacked version) 1.0.6. That's what FC7 uses.
It is most likely to be a drive issue, though, does dmesg say anything enlightening about the drive?

With a good DVD Drive and the old kernel in F7 a blank DVD will show up on my Desktop. One with stuff on it will show up with the name of the DVD and a panel with all the files listed.
If your using a new kernel none of the above happens.
