Hi,
I've got a new ThinkPad P1 and want to install Fedora 32 on it. I prepared a USB stick with the workstation ISO from https://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/releases/32/Workstation/... .
I boot from it and opt to test the media. Testing is very very slow and fails after %004.9 or so. "Faulty media", you'd guess. However the same USB stick passes just fine when sticking it into my older ThinkPad T460p. "Faulty USB port on the P1 machine", you'd guess. However, the P1 machine boots well when sticking to it a Windows 10 boot media (please don't ask me why I have that available).
Has anybody seen something like this, or has a clue that would help me put Fedora on my P1?
Regards, Dan.

USB3 ports on the newer machine versus USB2 on the older machine?
Does your USB stick claim to be USB3? Is it a reputable brand? Some early USB3 sticks were dodgy. USB3 signaling needs more careful RF design (lengths and routing of circuit traces and wiring) due to higher frequencies so slapping a new chip into a USB2 design without proper preparation may result in PPP (p*** poor performance).

Thanks!
I was using a somewhat fancy SanDisk Cruzer Glide 3.0. Due to your advice I used an older USB2-only stick which worked ok.
I would not hurry to blame the new stick. Maybe the P1 circuitry, or the Fedora USB3 driver are the dodgy ones?

Glad you got past the problem.
There is something funny about that model. Amazon reviews report highly variable speeds and some devices don't recognize it. One suggestion was that SanDisk Cruzer Glide 3.0. power draw was above spec.

Lots of Fedora systems (this one included) rely on USB3 external drives and don't have problems.
