I'm trying to convert my wife's laptop from Windows 7 to Fedora 22 running KDE 5. However, when she browses the web, occasionally the page will scroll as fast it can - either up or down - with no input on her part, other than loading the page.
The problem occurs with Firefox, Seamonkey, and Konqurer using KDE 5.
The problem does *not* occur at all under MS Windows 7, again using Firefox.
The hardware is a Dell XPS-13 laptop, originally came with MS Windows.
I have googled around, but haven't found anything that sounds similar. I'm planning to see if there is enough space to load Gnome and see if it also exhibits the same behavior.
Any suggestions for additional troubleshooting?
Hi,
Have you tried using google chrome and if so does the same thing happen ?

Hi Again,
Have you also tried using an older version of firefox or tried using fedora 23 instead ?

Nothing to do with an over-sensitive mouse pad? Not sure it has one, but I've seen this on another laptop I used.
Thanks for the suggestion - I have not tried google chrome - since the problem manifested with Konquerer, I am thinking it is unlikely to be a Firefox issue. But seeing what chrome does may be useful.

Thanks for the suggestion - the problem manifests without touching the trackpad (other than the click to load the web page). I tried adjusting sensitivity, switching from libinput to the legacy driver, etc. No change.

Very happy to hear I'm not the only one. Same issue with my touch-pad -- Lenovo E540

I have a problem with touchpads in general. My finger tips are normally quite dry, so they skip and jump when dragging across the pads. I always have to turn double click off, multitouch off, and sensitivity down a bit to get them to work right. It sometimes takes several iterations of the sensitivity setting to make it right. Also I tend to let my other fingers droop, which causes the issues with multitouch, one of which is super fast scrolling or jumping. Regards, Les H

Just wondering, can ordinary touchpads work with a drawing stylus?
I don't like touchpads, myself. I've played with drawing tablets which use a stylus, and found them slightly better. But they do suck at multi-select *and* drag/drop.
Some new/additional information.
While I understood originally that the problem occurred immediately upon loading a page, that was incorrect. The problem occurs when pressing PageUp or PageDown, which on a Dell XPS 13 is a combination of the Function key and up arrow (or down arrow). When the problem occurs, as soon as the keys are released, the page immediately continues scrolling in the same direction; i.e., if PgDn, it scrolls to the bottom, if PgUp, it scrolls to the top.
So it doesn't appear to be a trackpad issue after all.
We installed Gnome, and tried Firefox there, and the problem appeared.
So we think we have ruled out the browser (multiple different browsers show the problem), and now the desktop environment (both KDE 5 and Gnome show the problem).
I guess next up is to see if the problem goes away with Fedora 23. I may also try inverting the Function key in the BIOS, just to see what changes (if anything).

You could try PgUp in an "xev" window and see what X events actually happen. Maybe the key release event doesn't show up and it thinks you are holding the key down?

What happens if you open a document in a word processor and try that combination?
