I installed F20 shortly after it's release. Everything worked as expected. All kernels released since then have resulted in the sound not working.
The kernel that works is 3.11.10-301.fc20.i686+PAE. Sound does not work for the 3.12.x and 3.13.x kernels.
I have searched for a solution for this and found several recommendations but none worked for me.
I have compared a listing of the modules (lsmod) from the working kernel and non-working kennel and both lists have the same sound modules loaded (there is a size difference in some of the modules, but I expected that).
I have compared the output from amixer for both working and non-working kernels and they are exactly the same.
The sound related packages that are installed are:
pulseaudio-libs-glib2-4.0-13.gitf81e3.fc20.i686 alsa-tools-firmware-1.0.27-3.fc20.i686 alsa-utils-1.0.27.2-4.fc20.i686 alsamixergui-0.9.0-0.16.rc2.fc20.i686 alsa-lib-1.0.27.2-2.fc20.i686 pulseaudio-libs-4.0-13.gitf81e3.fc20.i686 alsa-firmware-1.0.27-2.fc20.noarch
I am not very knowledgeable about sound. I am sure I need to check other configuration settings but I do not know which files are relevant.
Any help will be appreciated,
David

you don't show the standard pulseaudio package?? pulseaudio-4.0-13.gitf81e3.fc20.x86_64
do you use the pulseaudio Volume control in Sound & Audio?

I have Mythtv installed as well. When I first installed Mythtv many years ago they recommended not using pulseaudio just alsa.

I am not certain that it is a bug. It could still be a configuration error. It does not seem that any one else is having this problem and that indicates to me that it is my problem in all likelihood.

My sound isn't working either. I didn't notice it until just this weekend. I know it was working but I can't say when it stopped.
I see the pulseaudio volume meter telling me that it's playing, I see the level varying, etc., but nothing from the speakers. I checked alsamixer and nothing is muted.
I'm playing an internet radio station via Chrome right now. I see in "pulseaudio volume control" that the speakers are pretty much pegged at the max but no sound at all. One odd thing I just noticed is that just below the two slider controls for left and right speaker and above the volume output level it says "Silence" on the left (which I understand) but "100% (0dB)" on the right which is strange. The two slider volume controls have a max of "153% (11.00dB)." Even at the max setting there is no sound at all.
I'll try to find some time this weekend to troubleshoot the problem.

Could the issue be the audio source itself? I had an issue yesterday with a web golf video I was watching where the instructor was talking away but there was no sound from my headphones, whereas other videos from the same source had no issues with sound. I have also noticed that with youtube videos that sound lvls output from the videos vary significantly, in that on some videos the sound is loud and on others if is very soft and almost inaudible.

It might be the source but I've tried a few between a bit ago and last weekend. Also, I would think that the pulseaudio volume meter wouldn't be showing me that it's pumping out sound at close to max volume if the sight wasn't sending me something. However, I'm no pulseaudio expert.
I have another laptop (Dell) so I'll check how it's working. The laptop that I use currently is from Think Penguin. The audio hardware (from lspci) is "Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor HD Audio Controller (rev 06)."

I installed it about a week or two ago, but had no speakers connected at the time. These are the currently installed kernels, I haven't tried sound with the older one, yet:
[tim@troubled ~]$ rpm -q kernel kernel-3.11.10-301.fc20.i686 kernel-3.13.10-200.fc20.i686
I have sound, but it's too quiet - it's down by about 15dB, according to my sound mixer (a real audio mixer, that my computer is patched into), from where I expect it to be (based on prior experience). And my cabling is fine (my background is in electronics engineering, I have thoroughly checked the cabling and equipment).
The pulseaudio metering is also showing very low, for audio sources that I know have plenty of signal strength. Running the computer's audio mixer levels into the overdrive range only manages to bring audio levels up by a small amount - normally you'd get horrid distortions as you go just a bit above 100%.
I did have one application play at proper levels, once, but everything else is running low.
The alsamixer levels have been turned up to full, as well as the pulseaudio controls (master levels, front speaker levels, headphone levels, and PCM/wave output).
There does seem to be some software bugs, you seem to be suffering worse than I am, though.

you might have the wrong card selected.. check the output tab, and see if you can select a different card. This used to happen to me all the time . I think somewhere you can change the default to the correct card. Right now, my pulse audio volume control is crashing, so I can't really explain any better, sorry:(

I had tried vlc and selected each card in turn and got no sound from any of them. NOTE: vlc started with audio selected as 'discard all samples'. Selecting visualizations did indicate that there was sound.

Error in the above. It does not start with audio selected as 'discard all samples'. It was just high lighted. It started with the default card selected.

I have tried all the recommendations I have received but none fixed the sound problem.
I normally install a list of programs using ks.cfg. To eliminate the possibility of not including one or more programs that need to be installed I re-installed F20 using the dvd and changing the desktop to xfce with xfce plugins and libreoffice.
The install program made all other selections.
After install I did a sound test using aplay on the original F20 kernel (3.11) and sound worked. I then did a full upgrade, reboot and retested using the same program (aplay) and the same sound file.
NO SOUND.
It would seem to me that one of the sound modules is the cause of the problem. The sound modules that are install are:
snd_hda_codec_realtek 45592 1 snd_hda_intel 42658 6 snd_hda_codec 155748 2 snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_intel snd_hwdep 13232 1 snd_hda_codec snd_seq 54679 0 snd_seq_device 13824 1 snd_seq snd_pcm 81999 4 cx88_alsa,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel snd_page_alloc 13852 2 snd_pcm,snd_hda_intel snd_timer 23750 2 snd_pcm,snd_seq snd 59132 24 snd_hda_codec_realtek,cx88_alsa,snd_hwdep,snd_timer,snd_pcm,snd_seq,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel,snd_seq_device soundcore 14123 1 snd
Since I am not very knowledgeable about sound, is it reasonable to unload all sound modules and reload the sound modules from the 3.11 kernel and re-test?
If so, do I use insmod 'full/path/to/module' that i want to load? Do I load them in the order that they are listed above? If not what order do I need to use?
Thanks for everyone's input,
David
I have had lots of input on this problem, however, none have fixed the sound problem. At this point, it is time to submit a bug report. Do I need to file the report with Fedora or with kernel.org?
Thanks to all for your help,
David

I see the pulseaudio volume meter telling me that it's playing, I see the level varying, etc., but nothing from the speakers. I checked alsamixer and nothing is muted.
you might have the wrong card selected.. check the output tab, and see if you can select a different card.

I would file a bug on fedora then take it up with the alsa-user mailing list: http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Mailing-lists if it's a driver issue they're the ones most likely to be able to help.
