Greetings;
I had a screen blank that wouldn't unblank, probably for the same reason it gets spells of blinking like crazy. So I used the big ctl-alt-backspace hammer to kill x.
KTorrent was running in window one at the time, seeding the F10-i386-DVD.iso. Still is for that matter, I can see it in the traffic lights on my switch, and the running processes in 'htop'.
However, even if I kill all those processes, I still cannot get the ktorrent gui to come up again. The launch attempt, either from the kmenu, or the CLI, will restart the processes ok, but still no gui so I can't control it, and its apparently part of the x server saved data, so if I kill all the processes and then use the mouse to exit x, then restart it again, the torrents are also started again, but w/o the gui.
Suggestions anybody? Or should I call ghostbusters?
Thanks.

i am under sl5.4 now and no ktorrent in this kde version, [i use ctorrent] so i can not check for ktorrent in kde help, which you might try.
ktorrent will resume from a pause, but not sure if you kill it.
while having other problems with ktorrent in f8, from a quick scan of 'forum' at http://ktorrent.org/ a month or two back, i do recall there were several post regarding problems similar to yours.
as a suggestion, let it keep running.
log http://ktorrent.org/forum/search.php and go from there. if nothing else, you will gain a familiarity with ktorrent and know what it will and will not do. ;o)
i know, not really and answer you would like, but it will get you going until you can find something better.
much luck.
later.
peace out.

I think its working fine, and I told it to quit when the share ratio got to 5, but without a gui, I can't know that.
Right now if I want to stop it, I have to kill all the subprocesses, and if I reboot, or restart x, they are started back up again.
Looking through the messages at the above link, one suggested deleting ktorrentrc, which I did, and that, while destroying the share data, did allow the gui to restart ok, so I set it to continue seeding. Now, if x doesn't crash again...
Thanks for the link, it was helpful.

good to know about ktorrentrc. thanks. will have to remember.
be sure to run a checksum. even tho ktorrent is supposed to do so, would not hurt to run yourself to insure that download is correct.

most welcome. glad it help. will check back thru it when i get ktorrent in this installation.

I did the sha1sum on the burnt disk, it was good, but the dvd doesn't autoboot in the machine I was going to put it on. Ubuntu's Hardy Heron cd does, in the same dvd reader. I haven't tried it here to see if it will autoboot though, and should.
Down with a cold, I haven't really felt like doing a whole lot. I did start on some drawer and door handles for an entertainment center I'm building yesterday, but my shop has very little heat and the current temp is about 2C. Being diabetic, that equals some darned cold feet. :(

if box it will not boot in has old bios, then dvd may not be recognized, while a cd is.
when box boots, press <scroll lock> to hold bios notice and write it down. check mainboard site for bios upgrade.

Naw, just a place for all her media, a 42" tv, the tuner/amp, dvd player and somewhere along the line a decent turntable so I can rip about 300 pounds of 12" lp's accumulated over a 34 year period of teaching primary school kids something about music. 8 drawers in the bottom of it, 2 big enough for lp's on edge. Don't have any that big, but I have noted that a layer of wood chips from the planer or jointer sure help. Then the missus wanders in and ask's me when am I going to clean this mess up. ;)p I don't think she connects the sawdust to the slowly dwindling stack of cherry, and the slowly growing piece of furniture. you must be too busy working in shop to notice termites got to you home page.
A typu as SWMBO would say, make the first 'Gene' into 'gene'. I fixed it above. :) And I have 5 pounds of boric acid powder on hand in case the termites come back, we've had the place professionally treated less than 10 years ago, for the third time. WV seems to have an endless supply of those critters. There is also a flashing barrier between the wooden garage walls base sills and the retaining wall I built that two of the walls are standing on. :) Level land in WV is very expensive, takes lots of caterpiller fuel to make it. In fact its been said that if WV was stomped out flat it would be bigger than Texas.
i just built a 12' x 16' yard barn with loft. wish i had shot progress pics, but i did shoot a bunch after. not on any home page yet, but do plan to.
Mine is the same size, visible in some of the pix under the Garage link, views from the top of the house all around. The one with the front deck. :) Not a lot of overhead, enough to store a few sticks. Some interior views of the mess in there are under the emc link on that page.
code inspectors that came out for checks, told me it was well built and that i did have a lot of 'over kill'. even said loft, with 2" x 10" x 12' on 12" centers and double studs every 4', was strong enough to hold a car. problem is i do not have a drive up ramp to check it out. [yet]

1 credit.
So its deeper than that. Hey, a dvd block size is 2048. Is 512 enough?
you are correct. not even near.
i have never looked at a dvd track 1 until now. and now that i have i am at a wonder about what i have read about using a bootable floppy to create a bootable dvd.
i presumed that by using a floppy, it's bootsector would be used to apply to sector of dvd. i know know how much i was mistaken.
i ran 'dd' 2048x1 to see what would be there and it was all 00. x10 was all 00. x100 and i found it blank all the way thru 0x7fff. at 0x8000 is disk label info.
after that bit of disappointment, i decided that i will search web tonight to see what i can find on layout of track for cd's and dvd's.
i am in cst zone, so it will be a little while after 0600hrs utc before i go look.
i noted another reply in thread. possibly i will be save some time by one who is knowledgeable with plastic mirrors. :o)
Probably too old, and HP's web site search sucks, I won't say how bad but its rated in Torrs with a -39 ee notation.
I found 2 bios updates, depends on the motherboard in this one and I have NDI how to determine that quickly.
linux format has a hardware id program that is supposed to be able to pull all that info. have used it a couple time with some early installs, but do not recall if it does mainboard info.
Later friend.
i thank you for that. ;o)
Its the alky that does it. I can drink one beer, but 2 is out. My normal is 2 an evening, of very lo cal stuff.
i quit beer in 1962 while stationed at tyndall afb, fl. out with a crew from barracks and was introduced to boiler makers, i was stone on 3rd. after a long recovery next morning of 2 hours in shower with straight cold water, i swore off beer. still drank up to about 35 yrs old and then quit all but a greek liquor called metaxa. made from grapes and is of 2 ratings of 5 and 7 star. 7 star is 92 to 98 proof. 3 to 4 shots are my limit and do not drink them very often.
Actually I'm a semi-retired broadcast engineer. Need something to keep me out of the bars, otherwise I'd sit in this chair till the odor of death was present I fear.
broadcast engineers never die, they just 'cherry out their finials'.

just as a 'try something' and see where problem may be, run; 'dd if=/dev/sr0 of=bootsec-00.hex bs=512 count=1' [incrementing '-00'] on dvd's and run 'diff' to see what may have changed.
I just burnt another, same
brand of media as the Fu9 I have installed on it, and from the same spindle of HP dvd-r disks, just for grins. And it won't boot in that drive either. The bios does look at the disk, it just doesn't like what it sees I guess.
when box boots, press <scroll lock> to hold bios notice and write it down. check mainboard site for bios upgrade.
This bios ignores that, I had a hell of a time catching it and memorizing it.
Phoenix Bios 6.0.D. The box is old, 1Ghz athlon.
then a bios update may be in order.
Down with a cold, I haven't really felt like doing a whole lot.
take 2 aspirin, 2 sudafed, and a pint of bourbon. may not help rid your cold, but your nose will not be running and you really will not mind.
I learned decades ago, that when I mix alcohol with a cold, its an instant strept throat & 2 weeks on Erythromycin 500's, 3x/day.
strep is no pleasure. that being case, how about gin, vodka, or rum? <bwg>
i learned a pint of bourbon and a bunch of covers to sweat out a fever in late 1960 while station in denver. worked real great. tried on a cold, did not help, but like i said, did not care.
I don't think they will hold them all either, but...
but my shop has very little heat and the current temp is about 2C. Being diabetic, that equals some darned cold feet. :(
lay cardboard on floor where working.
Don't have any that big, but I have noted that a layer of wood chips from the planer or jointer sure help.
ok. a cabinet maker / wood craftsman. most i have known have been like you. always building something new and never time to clean floor. why waste time cleaning up when it will just get covered again. :o)
you must be too busy working in shop to notice termites got to you home page.
i just built a 12' x 16' yard barn with loft. wish i had shot progress pics, but i did shoot a bunch after. not on any home page yet, but do plan to.
code inspectors that came out for checks, told me it was well built and that i did have a lot of 'over kill'. even said loft, with 2" x 10" x 12' on 12" centers and double studs every 4', was strong enough to hold a car. problem is i do not have a drive up ramp to check it out. [yet]
Humm, I think I've wandered off topic again, blame it on a senior moment or whatever.
i am 68 and looking forward to 'senior moments'.
Another silly Q? I have the bios files in the form of .exe's. Do I write them to a mounted floppy, or dd them to the unmounted floppy? Obviously I haven't done that for a while. :)

must be written to a bootable msdos floppy. or run thru a dos emu.
usually program is a 'self run' that flashes cmos chip with new bios.
you do need to be sure that you are using correct bios. if you do not, you may not be able to boot with wrong bios. as for any damage, all i can say is that times that i did flash a new bios, i knew it was correct one.
peace out.

Looking through the messages at the above link, one suggested deleting ktorrentrc, which I did, and that, while destroying the share data, did allow the gui to restart ok, so I set it to continue seeding. Now, if x doesn't crash again...
good to know about ktorrentrc. thanks. will have to remember.
be sure to run a checksum. even tho ktorrent is supposed to do so, would not hurt to run yourself to insure that download is correct.
I did the sha1sum on the burnt disk, it was good, but the dvd doesn't autoboot in the machine I was going to put it on. Ubuntu's Hardy Heron cd does, in the same dvd reader. I haven't tried it here to see if it will autoboot though, and should.
The BIOS may not know DVD, but there is something you can try before you start trying new BIOS versions. Any machine that old has a floppy, and there's a floppy program you can boot which knows how to boot CDs and DVDs from any reasonable ATAPI IDE reader (I but you use IDE not SATA). Someone on this list will know where to get it so I don't have to search. It's the boot floppy for Puppy Linux, or Damn Small Linux, or one of the micro distributions, and I used it about two years ago.
Down with a cold, I haven't really felt like doing a whole lot. I did start on some drawer and door handles for an entertainment center I'm building yesterday, but my shop has very little heat and the current temp is about 2C. Being diabetic, that equals some darned cold feet. :(
Please take care of yourself! Home Depot has some inch thick mats for tired feet, but that much heavy duty foam rubber has got to insulate. The edges lock together like puzzle pieces, so you can make a work area of whatever size you need.
No, I didn't notice the price, sorry.
And watch the cold, I have been down for three weeks and semi-functional for two more with pneumonia. Worst thing is that antibiotics make everything taste like garbage, even good microbrew beer.
Thanks for the link, it was helpful.
most welcome. glad it help. will check back thru it when i get ktorrent in this installation.
Thanks again.

I went here: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/BIOS_Upgrade#The_Diskette_Updater and created a bootable dos-6.22 cd that thinks it is a 2.88 meg drive A: (and the real floppy becomes B:) but when I navigate to B: and enter the filename I can see, they then report they don't run under DOS. Bummer.
So I boot it to F9U and have yum install wine*. It does in due time, but then wine insists the (*&^$% floppy is D: and it gets all the way through the unpacking of the .exe, than asks for a fresh clean floppy in drive a: before it will do anything else. So I go edit the config file and change the letter d to an a. That works and I have an A: drive, but wine thinks its an NTFS formatted drive and cannot, regardless of the emulation mode chosen in the wine.config, access a vfat formatted disk. Reading the disk only works at the default d: drive assignment.
So now I'm waiting for a "wine expert" to throw me a bag of fresh bones to gnaw on. There has to be a way to update the bios on this 8 year old SOB. I don't have the original XP install as WGA locked me out of it when I replaced the dead psu and added another stick of memory. I intended to put linux on it anyway, so that's no big loss to me. Till now. I'm ready to go throw a chair at Steve Balmer. :)
Did I mention that I think M$ is a bunch of paranoid rectums?
Help, I need a bios patcher that works with linux or wine. For old Phoenix boxes.

No, I didn't notice the price, sorry.
Big Lots had those, but only about 3/8" thick, but like you said, a $20 for a 2x4 foot area. I have one out in the old workshop shed. And can't say as it helps all that much, a quarter inch of cherry chips works better IMO. :)
And watch the cold, I have been down for three weeks and semi-functional for two more with pneumonia. Worst thing is that antibiotics make everything taste like garbage, even good microbrew beer.
And I've been told by the medics, several times now that alcohol reduces the effectiveness of most antibiotics. You'll get better faster without even if it seems longer. :)
I got a fresh pneumonia shot this year, along with the flu shot, so I should be good to go in those depts, if they guessed right on the flu strains this year.
Wine experts, please opine on how to fix this one.
Thanks Bill.

some dos level utilities will not emulate if a:\ is changed and maybe a part of problem with using a cd for 'a:'.
there is a cd called 'ultimate boot cd' available from; http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ and http://sourceforge.net/projects/ubcd/
it was recommended thru this list, but thanks to my forgetfulness, i do not recall who recommended it. i do need to start making notes of such. also, when i reboot this box and back up this install's '/home/geo' and '/home/users', i will start other install's and go thru stored emails to find who recommended.
i will say this, tho i do not recall name of recommender, he has passed along a lot of other good advise to me and others here, so i will say 'ubcd' just may have what you need.
i have a copy of 4.1.1 and i can say that from looking at it, it is loaded. problem is, i have yet to try it out, so i can not say how well it works.
from '/website/index.html' that is on cd, there are 5 different dos boot disk images. no ms dos due to 'commercial nature', but it does show a link to; http://www.veder.com/nwdsk/ which is worth having a look at. [ http://www.veder.com/nwdsk/#ms.img ]
also, i do have several 6.22 disks and a winme recovery disk that i would be happy to run 'dd' on them and send you images.
Did I mention that I think M$ is a bunch of paranoid rectums?
anyone who uses linux knows that.
And I've been told by the medics, several times now that alcohol reduces the effectiveness of most antibiotics. You'll get better faster without even if it seems longer. :)
i have been told also, but i seldom take any medications that i have need to be concerned. those that i have taken, pain pills for ruptured disk and rotated vertebra, metaxa has enhanced relief. or at least it seemed that way so i really was not in pain. which is what counts.
if they guessed right on the flu strains this year.
1st, last, and only flu shot i have ever had, i came down with flu shortly after. doc's reply, well there are some that they do not help.
i also had good fortune to have had west nile. after being down with it and talking to doctor about it, his reply, well at least i did not have to worry about getting it again. doctors are pill pushers.
Wine experts, please opine on how to fix this one.
check 'ubcd' site and get it over with. :o)
peace out.
