i have 2 laptops: a dell inspiron 8000 (p3) and a dell inspiron 5100 (p4). the p3 has fc2 and runs perfect! on the other side the p4 had fc2 and had overheating problems. now i installed fc3 and it still has overheating problems. the fen runs continuously and the temperature is at 68C average. sometimes it reaches the critical 80C and it shuts off. i wasn't able to find any helpful info on the web or i just didn't know where to look. any helpful info would be appreciated.

Well - P4 chips are power hungry - so that could be an unsolveable problem. Is it a mobile P4? If so - it should support speedstep. Does it work?
Try the following: # grep MHz /proc/cpuinfo model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1600MHz cpu MHz : 598.068 # cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_driver centrino # cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor userspace
If its not working - check the following on how it set if up for P-III. http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2004-November/msg04371.html
You might have to change 'speedstep-smi' to 'peedstep-ich' for P4

Try the following: # grep MHz /proc/cpuinfo model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1600MHz cpu MHz : 598.068
this is the output before:
# grep Hz /proc/cpuinfo model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz cpu MHz : 2791.430
and this folder is empty:
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/
i don't have the files you were telling me about.
i've followed the link u gave me, changed 'speedstep-smi' to 'p4-clockmod' (which is for p4) not 'peedstep-ich':
edit /etc/cpuspeed.conf, modify the DRIVER line to read:
DRIVER="p4-clockmod"
add this line into /etc/modprobe.conf:
options p4-clockmod smi_port=0xb2 smi_cmd=0x82 smi_sig=1
and now i get this output:
# grep Hz /proc/cpuinfo model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz cpu MHz : 348.921
the files in this folder were created:
# ls /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ cpuinfo_cur_freq scaling_available_governors scaling_max_freq cpuinfo_max_freq scaling_cur_freq scaling_min_freq cpuinfo_min_freq scaling_driver scaling_setspeed scaling_available_frequencies scaling_governor
and i see the cpu speed varies now. i'm trying to find out if this will influence the temperature. i'll give it a little time.

in the past few hours of working the cpu speed was ok, but the temperature averaged 70C, from 67-73C, the fan kept running at the same speed, medium. on the other side, the performance is poor. it takes long to do anything!

can you do 'cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies'
One way to speedup up is to use an additional option in /etc/cpuspeed.conf
OPTS="-i 1"

I don't know how this can be done - you can give it a try :)
what is this? i had "-i 2" and changed to "1"
/usr/sbin/cpuspeed --help
Ideally I'd like an option for cpuspeed to ingonre certain frequencies (esp all the intermediate ones). I'd rather it just jumps between the lowest (save power) & highest (max-performance)

ok! cpu freq varies upon usage, whitch is fine. but the temp will not drop below 70C. once it reaches 58C the fan kicks in at medium speed and stays like that. i'm trying to find a way to make run at a higher speed till it cools off.

There is always a tradeoff with 'cpu temperature' - and the 'fan speed'
i.e when the CPU is running at lower freq - one can slow down the fan and keep the same tempurature - or one can keep the fan running faster - causing the CPU to get cooler.
My guess is this part of the logic is done in the bios. Don't know if it is configurable.
Satish
see, i did not have this temperature issues before on fc2 about 6 month ago. nor under win xp. the fan used to kick in at high speed, cool down and fan speed used to slow down to min.

6 months is a long time - the hardware could have deteriorated. FC2 & FC3 now have similar kernels. Anyway - were you using APM instead of ACPI with FC2?
As you suspect - there could be something else going on. This is a "don't know" zone for me.

yeah. under xp doesn't heat up this much.

acpi. i wasn't paying too much attention till it started burning my fingers and sometimes shutting down because of overheating - 80C.

i wish i had more time to spend on this. already lost few nights of sleep. :)

I couldn't find the thread start for this as I'm not at the office, but I installed gkrellm with the i8k extensions for my dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. I can control the fan speed or let the computer do it. Mine runs nicely at 40 - 45 C and 1200MHz. I can speed up to 1700MHz and the fans kick in and run pretty loud.
Hope this helps.

ok! i installed gkrellm but it does not have any options for fans. so i got i8krellm but can't install it cuz i need i8kutils. so i got this one too. only that this is over my knowledge. i did make - ok; i did make install - ok. but it's not ok because i can't find i8k.o. i read i had to compile kernel module. this is where i get lost. any help would be more than appreciated!

The FC3 kernel contains i8k as a module... but you might have to append a force=1 to the modprobe line because not all laptops that support i8k are known to the driver (example, my inspiration 8500).
