I did the ($ yum groupremove "GNOME...etc) command, but it also removed some weird stuff along... it removed for example, openoffice.org writer, kdeadmin, openoffice.org langpacks and others...
why the hell did that happen?

Hey
I am currently using KDE on my FC4 system, and I dont need nor use Gnome 99% of the time, so I wanted to remove it form the system. The Add/Remove applications program can only remove certain packages from gnome, but not all of it, nor its core files. Is there anyway I can remove GNome DE?# yum groupremove "GNOME Desktop Environment"
PS: how can i know a package name for a certain program? i mean if i have like, program x, or package x listed in the Add/Remove program, how do i get to know its package name to remove it withrpm?
Add/Remove Program (system-config-packages) doesnt understand repositories. This is scheduled to be fixed for the final release of Fedora Core 5. For now you can use Yumex which is a graphical frontend for yum available from the Fedora Extras repository.

Some of those must have had (correctly or erroneously) dependencies on GNOME libraries. It would be useful if you could post the output of yum, or the list of packages that were removed (you could look in /var/log/yum.log). It may even be a bug in the yum dependency resolver. But without the details, it's impossible to tell. If you have the information, it would be very useful to packagers though.
Hey
Sorry, I dont have the yum output now, cause this happened a long time ago... But it removed everything, I had to re-install FC4 to get any access to my pc, because when the yum was done with the pc, all I could do was log-in to a console :$
I will try to simulate the removal again and find the yum output to list here

Okay! I decided to see if I could help, I entered the following command and chose no so as not to trash one of my systems.
yum remove gnome*<enter>
below is the list of packages that would have been removed had I proceeded with the uninstall.
Note, this is a clean install of Fedora 4 with all updates applied. The only packages outside of the fedora stock install is xmms-mp3 and the mythtv suite.
I did this because I too wanted to uninstall gnome one time, but when I saw the list if dependency removals I opted not to proceed, as I knew that it would trash my install.
Pay particular attention to the dependency removals.

The dependency shows GNOME 2.12 from nrpms. So this is pretty different from a stock installation.
That is true, I will show you the same thing before the nrprms update of gnome, I have another fc4 machine to build first of this week. These hooks into gnome are scatttered all over the stock install. As I recall one item to be removed was the openoffice package, why should that be hooked into gnome?

Thanks hicham
Hello What if I want to remove gnome but keep some of the utilities like gaim, firefox,.... anyone tried that ?
I would leave it alone. If that's not good enough, then remove gnome and whatever goes with it, then reinstall what you want.
If that pulls everything back in, there's nothing more to be done, but that might not happen.
_MY_ time is too valuable to fight over a few dollars worth of disk.
Okay, I finally got around to the fresh install, and the following gnome packages are from the install cd's, note all of the dependencies that would need to be uninstalled.

The packaging listing looks saner than earlier list but the above packages shouldnt be removed. I will initiate a discussion in fedora-devel.

I am unable to reproduce this on Fedora devel tree aka rawhide. Yum groupremove "GNOME Desktop Environment" on a box with Gimp, Firefox and all the system-config-* doesnt list it for removal, only the GNOME specific things. Maybe things have improved from the release you are using.
