Overriding EFI frame buffer resolution

What's the proper method to force a specific resolution in EFI?

I've tried the following kernel options (and in combination) without success:
nomodeset
video=640x480x32
video=efifb:640x480x32
video=efifb:800x600x32
vga=769
vga=785
vga=786

Long story short: I need the console resolution to get down to 80x25 for a 
legacy app.
